Aberfeldy is a small Highland town on the River Tay, 90 minutes by bus from Perth, with a 1730s bridge, a whisky distillery, a restored cinema and walking straight from the main street. The big draws around it — Schiehallion, Ben Lawers, Glen Lyon, Loch Tay — need a car or a tour. Two nights covers the town and one glen; one night is enough if you are passing through.

Get around

The town itself is walkable: bridge, distillery, cinema and the Birks o'Aberfeldy path are all within 15 minutes on foot. Everything else needs a car, bike or taxi. Stagecoach bus 23 runs from Perth via Birnam and Dunkeld roughly every two hours Monday–Saturday (about 90 min); on Sunday there is one morning bus in and one evening bus out. Sweeney's bus 91 links Aberfeldy and Kenmore twice on weekdays, around 09:00 and 16:00.

  • Midges are worst on still evenings near water from June to August; take repellent.
  • Single-track roads around Loch Tay and Glen Lyon need passing-place discipline; drive on the left.
  • Mobile signal is 4G only and patchy on Three; download maps before you leave Perth.

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, single-track roads and hills. Tell someone your route on Schiehallion or Ben Lawers, carry a map and waterproofs, and call 999 for mountain rescue.
