Abidjan
Abidjan is a morning-and-evening city: do the Plateau and the markets before 11:00, take a car (not a walk) between the lagoon districts, and keep every ride to daylight or a hotel-booked driver.
Abidjan is spread around the Ebrié Lagoon: Plateau (offices), Cocody (residential, the lagoon bay), Treichville and Marcory (markets and restaurants) are joined by a few bridges that jam at rush hour. The trips that go wrong cross the bridges at 17:00, walk between districts in the midday heat, or arrive at night without a booked car. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Grand-Bassam and Assinie are trips away from one kept bed.

Essentials
- Currency
- XOF
- Money
- Cash (XOF) for markets, maquis and taxis; cards in larger hotels, malls and a growing number of restaurants. Mobile money (Orange Money, MTN, Moov) is widely used between locals but is fiddly to set up as a visitor.
- Daily spend
- Budget XOF 15,000–30,000 excl. bed · Mid XOF 30,000–70,000 excl. bed · High XOF 70,000+ excl. bed (estimate; check)
- SIM and data
- Buy an Orange, MTN or Moov SIM at the airport or a branded boutique with your passport; registration is required by law.
- Emergency
- Police 111 or 170 (check) · Fire 180 (check) · Ambulance 185 SAMU (check)
- Plugs
- 220 V; two-pin European sockets (type C/E). Bring a universal adapter.
- Tipping
- Not expected at maquis or stalls. Round up taxi fares; 5–10% in upmarket restaurants if service is not already added.
- Water
- Do not drink tap water; buy sealed bottled water (check the seal) or use a filter.
- Toilets
- Hotels, malls and larger restaurants; carry tissues, as paper is not always supplied.

Get around
Walk inside a cluster by day; use a ride-hailing app or a booked car between districts and always after dark. Bridges are the bottleneck: plan crossings outside rush hour.
| How | Fare | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | Free | Inside the Plateau, Cocody bay, Treichville market by day |
| Ride-hailing car (Yango, Uber) | XOF 1,500–5,000 across the centre | Between clusters, bags, night |
| Metered or street taxi (orange) | Agree first: XOF 1,500–4,000 for a short ride | When apps are slow |
| Wôrô-wôrô (shared taxi) | XOF 200–500 per seat on a fixed route | Short local hops if you know the route |
| Gbaka (shared minibus) | XOF 200–400 | Local routes if you're adventurous |
| Bateau-bus (lagoon ferry, STL) | XOF 200–500 | Crossing the lagoon between Plateau, Treichville and Yopougon avoiding bridge traffic |
| Rented car with driver | XOF 25,000–50,000 a day (check) | Day trips to Grand-Bassam, Assinie or Yamoussoukro |
Fares are estimates; check before you ride.
- Passes
- No pass. Agree the fare before you get into a street taxi; ride-hailing shows the price first.
- Late at night
- No rail or metro constraint; ride-hailing runs at night but wait times rise in heavy rain.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Churches and mosques: Shoulders and knees covered; remove shoes before entering a mosque prayer hall.
- Greetings: Always greet with 'bonjour' before asking a question or starting a transaction — skipping it reads as rude.
- Right hand: Give and receive money, food and objects with the right hand or both hands, not the left alone.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, and never photograph police, soldiers, government buildings, bridges or the airport.
- Paying and haggling: Haggle at markets with a smile; never at maquis or shops with posted prices.
- Dress: Casual is fine in Cocody and Plateau; dress a little more conservatively in Adjamé, Yopougon and at religious sites.
Red lines
- Do not photograph police, soldiers, government buildings, bridges or the airport.
- Ask before photographing people, especially at markets.
- Greet before you ask or buy: a short 'bonjour' opens every exchange.
Scams and watch-outs
- Street money-changers offering a better rate than banks: short-changing and fake notes are common — use a bank or hotel desk.
- Self-appointed 'guides' who attach themselves at the airport or a market and demand payment after showing you around: agree nothing, or decline politely and firmly.
- Shared taxis (wôrô-wôrô) and gbaka minibuses quoting a 'special' higher fare for foreigners: ask a local the going rate first, or use a ride-hailing app with a shown price.
- Fake charity or 'orphanage' collectors near hotels and the cathedral: donations to unregistered individuals rarely reach anyone in need.
One and two days
1 day
A stopover between flights or before a beach trip. Skip: Grand-Bassam: needs a half or full day of its own.
