- Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
- Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
- Kazakhstan ↗Visa-free entry applies to many nationalities, usually up to 30 days; check your own passport on the official government portal before you book, and keep your entry record.
- Kazakhstan ↗Use a ride-hailing app (Yandex Go or inDrive) or the airport rank; do not accept unmarked cars offered in the arrivals hall.
- Kazakhstan ↗Some mountain areas near the Kyrgyz and Chinese borders need a border-zone permit; ask your driver or the park office before you go.
Almaty Province wraps around Almaty city, which is administered separately and holds the beds, the airport and the food. The province is the ring of country around that city: the Tian Shan foothills and Shymbulak are under an hour south, while Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai lakes sit far east — a long day out or an overnight, not a quick side trip. Almost nobody needs to change hotels to see the near mountains. Sleep in Almaty, hire a car or a driver for the long days, and treat the far east as its own trip.

- Almaty and the foothills
- Continental: hot, dry summers and cold winters. May–June and September–October are the walking months; July–August is hot in the city but fine higher up.
- Canyon and steppe east
- Drier and windier than the city; summer afternoons are hot and exposed, spring and autumn are the comfortable windows.
Snow closes high passes from roughly November to April. The best months are also the busiest weekends for locals heading to the mountains.
