Place · Medeu valley
Medeu rink and dam
A half- to full-day mountain outing, not a quick stop: the high-altitude speed-skating rink, then the 842 steps up to the dam viewpoint if you want the climb and the view; go on a clear day and check the weather before you commit the trip.
- 842 steps to the dam
- High-altitude Soviet-era rink
- Gateway to Shymbulak
- Crowded at peak
- Queue: switch at 30 min
- Hard in a wheelchair

Rules in force · 8Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut w…Pavements in the centre are uneven and icy in winter
- Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
- Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
- Kazakhstan ↗Visa-free entry applies to many nationalities, usually up to 30 days; check your own passport on the official government portal before you book, and keep your entry record.
- Kazakhstan ↗Use a ride-hailing app (Yandex Go or inDrive) or the airport rank; do not accept unmarked cars offered in the arrivals hall.
- Kazakhstan ↗Some mountain areas near the Kyrgyz and Chinese borders need a border-zone permit; ask your driver or the park office before you go.
- Almaty Region ↗Check the mountain forecast and the road status on the morning of any mountain trip; cable cars, lake roads and passes close in storms and snow.
- Almaty ↗From November to March pavements are icy: wear shoes with grip, and take a ride-hailed car rather than the hill paths after dark.
- Almaty ↗Pavements in the centre are uneven and icy in winter: large suitcases go from the car to the door, never on a walk.

Tickets, prices and entry
Know before you go
- Opened in 1969 at about 1,691 m altitude; a Soviet-era training and world-record speed-skating venue, still used for events.
- The dam above the rink was built to hold back mudflows (selevoy potok) after a major 1921 disaster destroyed much of the earlier settlement; it is itself a protective structure, not just a viewpoint.
- The road continues past Medeu to the Shymbulak cable car base, so this can be combined with a ski or gondola day rather than visited alone.
Tickets & entry
- Where to buy
- Buy at the entrance on the day.
- Buy from the official site or the ticket desk; resellers add a fee for the same ticket.
- Skating sessions and skate rental are ticketed separately from simply visiting the site; entry to look around is normally free or low-cost — check locally.
- What's closed
- Between skating seasonscheckThe rink surface itself is not always in ice-skating condition outside winter; it remains visitable as a valley and dam viewpoint year-round.
“Check” dates move year to year: confirm on the official page for your date.

Questions and answers
Do I need to book ahead?
No booking needed to visit the site; skate rental in winter may need a short wait at the counter on busy days.
Checked 2026-09-28 · Voykit desk
Is it worth it without skating?
Yes — the dam stairs and valley views stand on their own, and it is the easiest taste of the mountains without a full day trip.
