A walk across bare, jagged coral pinnacles on the south-east coast to a sand-floored chasm reached down a wooden ladder: go in closed shoes with water and sun cover, allow a full morning or afternoon, and do not rush the pinnacle crossing.

Rules in force · 9
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Polynesia ↗In much of Polynesia Sunday is kept for church and family: expect shops, tours and some flights to stop, and dress and behave quietly in villages.
  • Niue ↗Entry rules are Niue's own: many visitors get a permit on arrival with an onward ticket and booked accommodation, but check Niue immigration for your passport. Travelling through Auckland may require an NZeTA or transit visa; check New Zealand's rules too.
  • Niue ↗Declare food, plant and animal products on arrival; Niue protects its crops from pests.
  • Niue ↗Sea tracks cross village and family land: follow local signs, some charge an access fee, and some are closed on Sundays.
  • Alofi and the west coast ↗Sunday is a rest day: shops, cafés and dive operators close, so plan food and the flight around it.
  • Alofi ↗Sunday is a rest day: most shops, cafés and dive operators close, so plan the arrival, the flight home and the food shopping around it.
  • Alofi ↗There is no public transport, ride-hailing or metered taxi: your host or a hire firm arranges the airport pickup and a hire car for the island; ask how to get the local driving permit when you book.

Know before you go

  • Togo means roughly "beginning" in Niuean tradition; the chasm is a collapsed cave system where a pocket of soil and a spring support palms and other trees far below the surrounding bare coral, cut off from the rest of the island.
  • The crossing itself, an expanse of sharp fossil coral pinnacles (makatea), is as much the experience as the chasm: it has no shade and is uncomfortable in bare feet or open sandals.
  • The final ladder down to the sand floor of the chasm is optional: the viewing platform above gives the same photograph without the climb.

answered by Voykit editors · dated
Do I have to climb down the ladder?

No: the platform above the chasm gives the classic view without the climb, and is the better choice in heat or with children.
