- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Bolivia ↗Visa rules depend on your passport (some nationalities need a visa in advance): check with Bolivia's migration authority or a Bolivian consulate.
- Bolivia ↗Most of the tourist route is above 3,500 m: ascend gradually, rest on arrival, and see a doctor before travel if you have heart or lung conditions.
- Bolivia ↗Protests and road blockades (bloqueos) are frequent and can close routes and cities for days; watch local news and keep plans flexible.
The Bolivian Altiplano is the high plateau above roughly 3,500 m that runs from Lake Titicaca south past Oruro and Potosí to the salt flats on the Chilean border. It is not one destination: the salt flat and coloured lagoons sit in the far southwest, La Paz and Titicaca in the northwest, and the mining towns in between. Pick one or two bases and move by tour or bus, because distances are long, roads are rough and blockades can close them.

- June and July nights are the coldest of the year on the plateau; bring a real winter layer.
- Altitude is the main risk on the plateau, and more so on the higher southwest lagoon routes. Ascend gradually and watch for symptoms.
- Buses between La Paz, Oruro, Potosí and Uyuni run overnight and are cold; daytime buses are slower but easier.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salar de Uyuni | Uyuni | min | unknown | Organised 4x4 tours: a full day for the salt flat, 3–4 days for the southwest lagoons. Tours leave early morning; the mirror season needs a night or dawn start. |
| Tiwanaku | La Paz | 90 min | unknown | Pre-Inca ruins; go early, the site is exposed and windy. |
| Copacabana and Isla del Sol | La Paz | 210 min | unknown | Better as an overnight; a day trip is a long bus ride each way. |
Bags between cities
No luggage forwarding on the plateau. On multi-day salt-flat tours you carry your bag in the 4x4, so pack small and leave the rest at your Uyuni or La Paz hotel.

- Dry season roughly May–October: clear skies, cold nights, strong sun. Rain falls December–March, when the salt flat floods and gives the mirror effect. Whether rain closes lagoon roads — check locally.
Best months are also the coldest nights. The Salar mirror is best January–March; the dry white expanse is best May–November.
