Ambleside
Spend 1–2 days in Ambleside: walk the town centre, see Stock Ghyll Force and Bridge House, then take a bus or boat onward to Windermere.
Ambleside sits at the head of Windermere, England's largest lake, inside the Lake District National Park. The town is small enough to cover on foot, with the Armitt Library and Museum, Bridge House and Stock Ghyll Force close together. One day covers the town; a second day allows a lake trip or one of the nearby National Trust houses.
