  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • African islands ↗Sleep on the island you fly home from the night before your long-haul departure; inter-island flights and ferries in this region are cancelled or rescheduled often enough to break a same-day connection.
  • African islands ↗In the Indian Ocean islands book flexible rates for December to March: a cyclone warning can shut airports, ferries and roads for two or three days.
  • Madagascar ↗Check visa and e-visa rules for your passport on Madagascar's official e-visa portal before booking.
  • Madagascar ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route.
  • Madagascar ↗Hire a car with a driver for road trips; self-drive is rarely practical and driving after dark is unsafe.
  • Madagascar ↗Do not buy or export wildlife, tortoise shell, precious stones without a certificate, or protected plants; enforcement at the airport is strict.

Antananarivo Province is the highland core of Madagascar: the capital at about 1,300 m, the royal hill of Ambohimanga 24 km northeast, and the RN7 running south to Antsirabe. Most travellers treat it as a one-night arrival and leave. Two nights in Tana plus one in Antsirabe is the version that pays off, because the road south is where the country's best-known route begins.

Night sequences

2 nights
Tana 2 nights with Ambohimanga as a half-day
3 nights
Tana 2 + Antsirabe 1, then continue south on the RN7
  • The RN7 south of Tana is slow and busy; plan on 3–4 hours to Antsirabe, not the map's two.
  • Tana traffic can add an hour to any cross-city transfer in the morning and late afternoon.
  • Bubonic plague occurs in the Malagasy highlands, including this province; risk to travellers is low but avoid contact with rodents and fleas — check current advice before you go.

Day-trips door to door

AntsirabeAntananarivo210 minunknown162 km (101 mi) on the RN7; taxi-brousse takes about 3 h 30. Better as an overnight than a day trip.

Cool and damp for a tropical country: 10–25 °C (50–77 °F) most of the year, colder at night June–August. Rain concentrates December–March, often as afternoon storms.

April–November is the dry-season window and the best time for the RN7. July–August nights in Tana and Antsirabe are cold enough for a jacket.
