Before you start
Welcome to the Haute-Ville: Andohalo and the Rova audio walk in Antananarivo. 3 stops: Cathedral of Andohalo, Rova of Antananarivo and Andafiavaratra Palace. Morning cluster on the hilltop: the cathedral at Andohalo, the palace hill and a restaurant with a view; steep steps and cobbles, out before the afternoon.
Andohalo square south to the Rova hill. Underfoot: cobbles and steps; slope: steep; shade: low.
Antananarivo sits on a ridge of hills above a rice-growing plain, and it keeps its history stacked vertically: the royal hill at the top, the French-built commercial town on the flat ground below, and newer districts spreading out along the plain beyond both. A short walk from the Rova down to Analakely crosses four centuries — Merina kingdom, French colony, independence and a fast-growing capital of nearly three million people.
Before you start: Steps and cobbles: sturdy shoes; no suitcases. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Cathedral of Andohalo
Stop 1 of 3: Cathedral of Andohalo. Arrival point: Andohalo square.
The Catholic cathedral on Andohalo square, above the lower town: a short visit outside services; the square gives views over the city.
Christian holidays are marked visibly given the country's largely Christian population: Christmas and All Saints' Day, when families visit graves, are public holidays, and the Cathedral of Andohalo, along with other churches across the city, holds well-attended services.
Sunday mornings are for worship. Shoes on; dress modestly.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Rova of Antananarivo. It's about 11 minutes on foot. Route: Walk south up the hill. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Rova of Antananarivo
Stop 2 of 3: Rova of Antananarivo. Arrival point: Rova hill road.
The royal palace compound on the highest hill: history and the best views over the city; check that it is open, because restoration and guided-visit rules change.
Tour groups mid-morning. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Andafiavaratra Palace. It's about 3 minutes on foot. Route: Walk across the hilltop. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Andafiavaratra Palace
Andafiavaratra
Stop 3 of 3: Andafiavaratra Palace. Locally, Andafiavaratra. Arrival point: Rova hill road, opposite the Rova entrance.
A small royal-era museum two minutes from the Rova: the former residence of the 19th-century prime minister, with objects saved from the 1995 Rova fire; add it to the same morning as the Rova and the cathedral.
Andafiavaratra Palace, prime minister Rainilaiarivony's residence next to the Rova, dates from the same building phase and now holds a museum of objects rescued from the 1995 fire.
Quiet most mornings; a stop on some guided Haute-Ville tours mid-morning. Built in the 1870s for Rainilaiarivony, prime minister to three queens; badly burned in a 1976 fire and later restored as a museum. Holds royal furniture, portraits, weapons and regalia moved here after the 1995 fire gutted the Rova itself. Small and can be seen alongside the Rova and the cathedral in one morning. Is this the same as the Rova? No — this was the prime minister's residence, not the royal palace itself. It now holds objects moved here after the Rova fire, and is a short add-on to a Rova visit.
