- South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
- South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
- Maldives ↗Seaplane transfers fly in daylight only, and the last departure is set by sunset for that day; a late landing at Velana usually means a night on land and the seaplane next morning.
- Maldives ↗Local islands follow Islamic norms: alcohol is not sold, cover shoulders and knees in the village, and swimwear is for the designated tourist beach only.
- Maldives ↗Submit the online Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival; airlines and immigration ask for the confirmation.
Ari is two administrative halves of one atoll: North Ari (Alif Alif) and South Ari (Alif Dhaal). The reason to come is the water — South Ari's reef edge is one of the few places where whale sharks are seen year-round, and manta cleaning stations sit along the same rim. Resorts and guesthouses are both here, so the resort-or-local-island choice from the country page decides your transfer, your dress code and your alcohol rules before you book anything.

Night sequences
- 4 nights
- Dhigurah 4 — whale-shark and manta trips, no island hopping
- 6 nights
- Dhigurah 3 + Ukulhas or Rasdhoo 3, moving by fast ferry or domestic flight
- 7 nights
- One resort 7 — South Ari resorts sit on the reef edge; no daily boat needed
- Whale sharks and mantas are wild: no operator can promise a sighting, and South Ari is a marine protected area with approach rules.
- Public ferries are cheap but slow (3–6 hours) and do not run every day to every island; a missed connection can cost you a night.
- Seaplanes and domestic flights stop before dark — a late arrival at Velana usually means a night in Malé.
Day-trips door to door

| Maamigili | Dhigurah | 45 min | unknown | For the domestic flight back to Velana; confirm the boat time against your flight. |
Bags between cities
Guesthouses will usually hold bags while you dive; inter-island luggage transfer is not a standard service in Ari — carry it yourself on the ferry.

Manta and whale-shark sightings shift with plankton: South Ari's whale sharks are reported year-round, while manta aggregations follow the monsoon and are strongest in the wet season.
