Ariyalur is a working limestone district in the Chola heartland of Tamil Nadu, not a resort. Its draw is geology and early Chola stone: Cretaceous marine fossils in the quarries and the 9th-century Somanatha temple at Ariyalur town, with the UNESCO-listed Gangaikonda Cholapuram about an hour north. One night is enough; the rest of the Chola country is a day-trip chain from here.

- October–December is the northeast monsoon: short, heavy spells, not all-day rain. April–June is the heat peak; July–September is hot but drier.
October to March is the comfortable window. The same months are the Tamil temple and wedding season, so weekend trains and the few decent rooms fill early.
