Before you start
Welcome to the Clock Tower and Old Boma audio walk in Arusha. 3 stops: Natural History Museum (Old Boma), Uhuru Monument and Clock Tower and Tanzanite Experience. Clock tower, the monument roundabout and the Old Boma museum: the easiest morning walk in town.
The clock tower roundabout, Uhuru Monument and the museum grounds. Underfoot: pavement, uneven near crossings; slope: flat; shade: low.
Arusha sits on the southern slopes of Mount Meru, a highland market town that became, almost by accident of geography, the gateway to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Kilimanjaro.
Before you start: Do not photograph the monument roundabout's police posts. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Natural History Museum (Old Boma)
Makumbusho ya Historia ya Asili
Stop 1 of 3: Natural History Museum (Old Boma). Locally, Makumbusho ya Historia ya Asili.
The old German fort holds the town's museum: an hour for the region's natural and colonial history; a calm break from the street.
The clock-tower and Old Boma area is Arusha's compact historic core: the roundabout, the Uhuru Monument, the fort-turned-museum, and the hotels and operator offices that grew up around them.
Museum rules on photography apply; ask staff. Quiet; tour groups mid-morning. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Uhuru Monument and Clock Tower. It's about 5 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

2. Uhuru Monument and Clock Tower
Mnara wa Uhuru
Stop 2 of 3: Uhuru Monument and Clock Tower. Locally, Mnara wa Uhuru. Arrival point: On the clock tower roundabout.
The roundabout monument at the town's centre: ten minutes, a photo stop, and your orientation point.
Tanganyika became independent in 1961, and Arusha's clock tower and roundabout later gained the Uhuru (Freedom) Monument marking that independence.
Do not photograph police posts nearby. Loud with traffic all day.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Tanzanite Experience. It's about 7 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Tanzanite Experience
Look for
- Grading counter under white light
Stop 3 of 3: Tanzanite Experience.
A small gem museum and showroom near the AICC: 30–45 minutes to see how tanzanite is mined and graded before you consider buying any. Free to look, no pressure to buy.
For a photo: Grading counter under white light, check.
Tanzanite is graded by trained staff on site; do not buy loose stones from anyone who approaches you on the street. Quiet; a handful of tour groups mid-morning. This is a small private museum attached to a jewellery showroom: the mining and cutting story is free, the sales pitch afterwards is optional. Tanzanite is found in one place on earth, the hills near Mirerani south of Arusha; ask staff to show the grading chart before any price talk. Do I have to buy anything? No. The museum part is free to walk through; the showroom visit afterwards is optional and staff do not chase a sale hard, but budget 10–15 minutes to say no politely.
End of the walk
That's the end of the Clock Tower and Old Boma walk. To carry on, Central market (Soko Kuu) is about 15 minutes away (walk east). To carry on, Kijenge is about 12 minutes away (taxi west).
