Ashtabula County is Ohio's largest county, 705 square miles along Lake Erie's northeast corner, about an hour east of Cleveland and an hour west of Erie. It is a summer and early-autumn county: lake beaches, a wine trail, 53 covered bridges and small harbour towns. You need a car. Two nights covers the coast and the bridges; one night is a rushed loop from Cleveland.

Lake Erie shore and inland: Peak season is June to August. Lake breeze keeps summer days cooler than inland Ohio; October is the covered-bridge festival month and still comfortable. Winter brings lake-effect snow.

Summer weekends and the second full weekend in October (Covered Bridge Festival) are the busiest; book beds ahead for those dates.
