A cobbled street of kafanas, artists' studios and street lamps, laid out as a bohemian quarter since the early 1900s: a daytime look is quiet and quick, the evening version — kafanas, live music — is the reason to come.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Serbia ↗Serbia is outside the EU and Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport.
  • Serbia ↗Foreign visitors must be registered with the police after arrival; hotels do it, but in private rentals ask your host to confirm.
  • Serbia ↗Serbia does not accept entry into Kosovo from a third country as entry into Serbia. If you plan to cross between Kosovo and Serbia, check your government's advice for both before you book.
  • Belgrade ↗The fortress paths and the streets down to the rivers are steep and rough: large suitcases go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
  • Belgrade ↗Use a ride-hailing app or a taxi ordered by phone; unbooked airport and station taxis overcharge.

Tickets, prices and entry

Know before you go

  • Laid out deliberately as Belgrade's "Montmartre" from the early 1900s, when artists and writers gathered here; the name comes from Skadar (Shkodër), after refugees from that region settled the street.
  • The daytime street is mostly closed shopfronts and a handful of open cafés; the character comes alive with the evening crowd and music.

  2. 2Come back after 19:00 for the kafanas, live tamburitza or accordion music and a full dinner.
  3. 3Book a table for Friday or Saturday evening; walk-ins get the leftover seats.

Questions and answers

Questions and answers

answered by Voykit editors · dated
Is Skadarlija worth a daytime visit?

A quick look, yes, but it is an evening street: shopfronts stay shut and there is little atmosphere before dark.

Checked 2026-09-28 · Voykit desk

Do I need to book a kafana table?

Not required, but recommended for Friday and Saturday evenings, when the well-known kafanas fill up.
