Birštonas is a small Nemunas-loop spa town in Sūduva, southern Lithuania, about 3,100 residents, with hotels and sanatoria out of proportion to its size. It has been a mineral-water resort since the mid-19th century. One night covers the park, the museums and a spa session; two nights if you add the observation tower and a river afternoon. It is a rest stop, not a sightseeing city.

The town is small enough to walk. Birštonas Ferry crosses the Nemunas May–Sept with about five sailings a day and carries bicycles. Bike hire is available from the shop at Birutės g 19A, open daily. For Prienai, Kaunas or Vilnius, use the bus.

Scams and watch-outs

The bus stop is an open pull-in with no shelter; the building that looks like a station is a florist.
Mineral water is high in sodium and other minerals (about 7 g per litre): fine in small amounts, not for infants, small dogs or anyone with heart failure.
The observation tower is free in daylight only; 300 steps, no lift.
Some spa and restaurant listings change seasonally: check opening hours before you travel.

Very safe for a town of its size; the real issues are slippery riverside paths in winter, cold-water Kneipp sessions, and mineral water drunk in quantity by people who should not.
