Bristol
Give Bristol 2 nights as a base: Harbourside and Old City on foot day 1, Clifton and the suspension bridge day 2, Bath as a day trip.
Bristol is England's biggest city in the South West and works as a base for the West Country: cheaper beds than Bath, a walkable harbour centre, and a live music and street-art record that fills an evening. Two nights covers the centre and Clifton; add a third for Bath or Cheddar. It is a working city, not a museum, so expect traffic, hills and post-war concrete between the good bits.

Get around
Central Bristol (Harbourside, Old City, Broadmead) is walkable; Temple Meads is about a 15-min walk from the centre. Buses run from The Centre interchange. Dott e-scooters and e-bikes: £0.99 unlock plus £0.16/min, 18+, driving licence required, park only in app-marked bays or you keep paying (check). The city is hilly away from the Avon valley, so a mountain bike beats a city bike.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Hills and potholes: Clifton and the West End are uphill from the harbour.
- Broken glass on some cycle paths; watch the surface.
- St Paul's is best visited in daylight.
- Airport drop-off by car costs £8.50 for up to 10 min; use the free waiting zone and shuttle instead.
- Book rail and coach tickets in advance: walk-up fares are far higher than advance ones.
Bristol is a normal British city: central areas are fine by day and on busy nights out, and the usual rules apply — watch your bag in Broadmead and on late buses, avoid unlit riverside paths after dark, and treat St Paul's as a daytime area. The bigger practical risks are hills, broken glass on cycle paths and rain.
