Butterworth
Treat Butterworth as a transport hub, not a base: sleep 0–1 night, or use it only to change between train, bus and the ferry to George Town.
Butterworth is the mainland terminal for Penang: the rail station, the Penang Sentral bus station and the ferry pier sit within a few minutes of each other under the same overpass. Almost nothing here is a reason to stay, but everything here is a reason to pass through. Most travellers sleep on Penang Island and use Butterworth to reach the ETS line, the Thai border or the mainland suburbs.
