The Calgary Region is a ring of small towns 20–60 minutes from downtown Calgary. Hotels are cheaper and more plentiful in the city, and every town on this list is reachable as a half-day or full-day drive. Base in Calgary, rent a car for two or three of those days, and use the region's towns for food stops, museums and foothills access rather than as overnight bases.

Calgary and the plains
Winters are dry and cold, with chinook winds that can lift temperatures 15 °C (59 °F) in a day. Summer days are warm and long; afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August.
Foothills
Cooler and wetter than the city; snow can linger on trails into May and return in October.

Best months are June to September. July brings the Stampede and the highest prices; late September is quieter and still walkable.
