  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Table Mountain lower cableway station audio walk in Cape Town. 4 stops: Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Beach penguin colony. Weather-led cluster: the lower cableway station and its car park; go on the first clear, calm morning, by ride-hail car, and expect a queue.

The lower cableway station, car park and the start of Tafelberg Road. Underfoot: paved road and paths; slope: steep; shade: low.

Cape Town sits where a mountain, a peninsula and a trade route meet, and its history is written in that geography: a Khoe grazing ground became a Dutch East India Company supply station, then a British colonial port, then the proving ground for apartheid's harshest planning, and finally the capital of a province still working out what comes after it.

Before you start: Follow staff instructions on the cableway and near cliff edges. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

Stop 1 of 4: Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Arrival point: Tafelberg Road lower station.

The cable car to the top of the mountain: go at the first departure on a calm, clear morning; it stops in wind or cloud, so keep a spare day.

Robben Island, in Table Bay, held political prisoners including Nelson Mandela for 18 of his 27 years. District Six sits mostly empty today, a rare gap in the city fabric between the centre and Table Mountain's slopes, still awaiting full redevelopment decades after its residents were expelled; a technical college and a scattering of restitution housing now stand on part of the land. The Company's Garden and the surrounding Company's precinct, laid out from 1652 as a vegetable garden to resupply ships, still anchor the City Bowl's plan.

Stay on marked paths and behind barriers; do not climb in cloud. Queues build from mid-morning. Closed shoes; cold and wind on top.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. We have no walking time for this leg yet, so check your map. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

    Kirstenbosch

    Look for

    • Main lawns and Fragrance Garden
    • Boomslang canopy walkway
    • Botanical Society Conservatory

Stop 2 of 4: Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Locally, Kirstenbosch. Arrival point: Rhodes Drive main gate, ride-hail car or garden shuttle.

A large garden on the east slope of the mountain: go in the morning for shade and birdsong, or on a summer evening for a concert on the lawn; the Boomslang canopy walkway is the one thing not to skip. On a first visit: A calmer counterpart to the mountain and the Waterfront, with real shade and seating.

Look for Main lawns and Fragrance Garden: Flat paths from the gate; the easiest stretch for a stroller or a wheelchair. Look for Boomslang canopy walkway: A steel-and-timber bridge through the tree canopy; ramped at both ends. Look for Botanical Society Conservatory: Indoor glasshouse of succulents and desert plants; a shade and rain option.

Stay on marked paths; do not pick or remove plants. Quiet at opening; busiest on a fine weekend afternoon and during summer concert evenings.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. It is about 41.1 km to the south: too far to walk, so plan a ride and check your map. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope

    Cape Point

    Look for

    • Cape of Good Hope viewpoint
    • Cape Point old lighthouse
    • Dias Beach

Stop 3 of 4: Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. Locally, Cape Point. Arrival point: Self-drive or a tour vehicle to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve gate, then on to the Cape Point car park.

A half-day trip to the tip of the peninsula inside the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve: go early, drive the whole reserve road slowly for wildlife, and budget the funicular or the climb to the old lighthouse.

Look for Cape of Good Hope viewpoint: Signposted beach and rock viewpoint; a short walk from the car park. Look for Cape Point old lighthouse: Reached by funicular or a steep 10–15 minute climb; wide views over both oceans meeting. Look for Dias Beach: A steep path down from near the point; swimming is not advised — strong currents.

Do not approach or feed baboons; keep car windows closed and food out of sight in the reserve. Tour buses arrive mid-morning to early afternoon; quieter at opening and in the last two hours before gate close.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Boulders Beach penguin colony. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk: short drive back up the peninsula to simon's town, about 18 minutes. The next stop is about 17.8 km to the north. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

    Look for

    • Foxy Beach boardwalk
    • Second beach (swimming area)
    • Simon's Town waterfront
    • Foxy Beach boardwalk
    • Second beach with Table Mountain National Park cliffs behind

Stop 4 of 4: Boulders Beach penguin colony. Locally, Boulders Beach. Arrival point: Self-drive or a tour vehicle to the Boulders Beach entrance, Simon's Town.

A boardwalk beach at Simon's Town with a breeding colony of African penguins: go early or late for fewer people, and pair it with Cape Point on the same peninsula drive.

Look for Foxy Beach boardwalk: Raised boardwalk directly over the main colony; flat and step-free. Look for Second beach (swimming area): Sheltered boulder-strewn cove where swimming alongside penguins is permitted under posted rules. Look for Simon's Town waterfront: A short walk or drive from the beach; cafés and the naval harbour. For a photo: Foxy Beach boardwalk, morning, soft light. For a photo: Second beach with Table Mountain National Park cliffs behind, any clear time.

Do not touch or approach the penguins; keep at least a few metres away and off marked breeding areas. Tour groups arrive mid-morning to mid-afternoon; the boardwalk is quiet at opening.
