Region

Caribbean Nicaragua

Go only if you want the Corn Islands or a slow boat-and-rainforest coast; otherwise skip it — the Pacific side is easier.

Rules in force · 6Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) giv…
  • Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
  • Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
  • Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
  • Nicaragua ↗Check entry rules for your passport with a Nicaraguan embassy and your airline before booking; some visitors must register in advance, and entry can be refused without explanation.
  • Nicaragua ↗Avoid political gatherings and do not photograph police, the military or protests; foreign nationals have been detained or expelled.
  • Nicaragua ↗Do not bring drones or professional camera equipment without prior permission; they can be confiscated at customs.

Caribbean Nicaragua is the country's other half: an autonomous Atlantic coast of Miskito, Rama, Creole and Garifuna communities, five languages and no real dry season. The Corn Islands are the reason most travellers come — cheap diving, coconut seafood and a 1 h 15 flight from Managua. The mainland coast (Bluefields, Pearl Lagoon, Bilwi, the Río San Juan boats) is slower, wetter and harder to move around. Pick one: islands for a beach-and-dive week, mainland for culture and rainforest. Trying to do both in one trip means days of boats and rough roads.

  • Bluefields and Bilwi see more drug-traffic-related crime than the Pacific side; keep to basics and don't walk unlit streets at night.
  • Tap water is often salty in Bluefields and questionable elsewhere — drink bottled or purified water.
  • Hurricanes June–December can cancel flights and boats for days; keep a buffer before an international flight.
  • The Bluefields–San Juan del Norte boat has no reliable schedule; ask locally and expect it to change.

Bags between cities

No luggage-forwarding service on the coast. Carry everything; on pangas and small planes, soft bags beat hard cases.

Corn Islands
Warm year-round, sea about 27–29 °C (81–84 °F). Rain showers most months; trade winds December–April.
Mainland coast (Bluefields, Pearl Lagoon, Bilwi)
Bluefields averages around 225 rainy days a year; March–April is the driest window. Hurricanes roughly June–December.

There is no real dry season on this coast. If you want the best odds of sun, aim for March–April and accept that rain is always possible.
