The Caspian Basin is Kazakhstan's west: three provincial capitals (Atyrau, Aktau, Oral) spread across 436,000 km² of steppe, desert and Caspian shore. Distances are the plan. Atyrau is the oil city on the Ural River and the easiest arrival; Aktau is the Caspian port and the gateway to Mangystau's chalk canyons and underground mosques. Oral sits far north on the Ural River and is a separate trip. Sleep in one city, day-trip or overnight from there, and fly between the capitals rather than driving.
