Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
- Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
- Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
- Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
- Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
- Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.
Central Italy runs from the Tyrrhenian coast to the Apennine ridge and holds four regions: Lazio, Tuscany, Umbria and Marche, plus Abruzzo on the Adriatic side. Rome and Florence are the two anchors, 1 h 30 apart by high-speed train. The rest is hill towns, Etruscan sites and two coasts. Pick one city base plus one rural base; hopping between four towns in five days is mostly transit.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orvieto | Rome | 90 min | check | Regional trains from Roma Termini; the funicular climbs to the old town. |
| Siena | Florence | 90 min | check | Fast bus from Florence beats the train for the centre; book the return. |
| Assisi | Perugia | 30 min | check | Train to Assisi station, then a bus up to the basilica. |
| Civita di Bagnoregio | Orvieto | 60 min | check | Car or bus to Bagnoregio, then the footbridge; pedestrian-only. |
Bags between cities
Left-luggage offices at Roma Termini and Firenze Santa Maria Novella are the practical way to day-trip with bags; hotel-to-hotel luggage services exist but are not standard outside the big cities.

- Rome and the Lazio coast
- Mild winters, hot humid summers; the coast is a few degrees cooler than the city.
- Tuscany and Umbria hills
- Hill towns run cooler than the valleys; fog in November mornings.
- Marche and Abruzzo
- Abruzzo's high ground holds snow into spring; the coast is busiest in July–August.
April–June and September–October are the reliable windows. July–August is hot and crowded on the coast; winter is quiet and cheap in the hill towns but many rural hotels and restaurants shut.
