Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Cathedral Park & Ștefan cel Mare audio walk in Chișinău. 3 stops: Nativity of the Lord Cathedral, Triumphal Arch and National Museum of History of Moldova. Morning cluster: the Nativity Cathedral and the Triumphal Arch, then a long lunch on the boulevard; open, little shade, 2–3 hours.

Ștefan cel Mare boulevard from the Great National Assembly Square to Cathedral Park and the streets behind it. Underfoot: paved boulevards; slope: flat; shade: low.

Chișinău reads, on first walk, as a wide Soviet boulevard with a cathedral park at one end and a food market at the other. That reading is correct but thin: underneath it is a market town rebuilt twice after war, a wine industry that runs kilometres underground, a language and identity question that is still being argued over café tables, and a breakaway territory a short drive away that most visitors will only glimpse from a bus window.

Before you start: Cathedral dress code: covered shoulders and knees; no photos during services. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Nativity of the Lord Cathedral

    Catedrala Mitropolitană Nașterea Domnului

Stop 1 of 3: Nativity of the Lord Cathedral. Locally, Catedrala Mitropolitană Nașterea Domnului. Arrival point: Cathedral Park, off Ștefan cel Mare boulevard.

The city's main Orthodox cathedral, with the Triumphal Arch in front: 20 minutes of the morning walk; go before services fill it.

Covered shoulders and knees; no photos during services. Busy during Sunday and feast-day services; quiet on weekday mornings. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Triumphal Arch. It's about 2 minutes on foot. Route: Walk across the park. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Triumphal Arch

    Arcul de Triumf

Stop 2 of 3: Triumphal Arch. Locally, Arcul de Triumf. Arrival point: Great National Assembly Square, in front of the cathedral park.

A small 1840 arch facing the cathedral and the government building: five minutes on the morning walk, best paired with the cathedral and the boulevard rather than visited alone.

Government building behind the arch: do not photograph guards or gates up close. Thin at any hour except state events and parades on the square. Is there anything to see inside the arch? A bell is mounted underneath; there is no interior to visit. The value is the square and the view of the cathedral park.

Walk:Next, stop 3: National Museum of History of Moldova. It's about 5 minutes on foot, about 200 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk to the museum. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. National Museum of History of Moldova

Muzeul Național de Istorie a Moldovei

Stop 3 of 3: National Museum of History of Moldova. Locally, Muzeul Național de Istorie a Moldovei. Arrival point: 31 August 1989 street, a few minutes from Cathedral Park.

The country's main history museum, a short walk from the cathedral: the indoor option for a hot afternoon or a rainy morning, and the place to make sense of the Soviet-to-independence story before you see the rest of the city.

No photography in some rooms (signposted); ask staff before using a flash. Rarely busy; a group tour or a school visit is the main crowd risk. Is there English signage? Coverage varies by room; expect Romanian and Russian as the primary languages with partial English (confirm locally). How long do I need? About 70–90 minutes for a first-time visitor who reads a portion of the labels; 45 minutes if you move quickly through the highlights.
