Choosing your base, step by step
Step 1: decide how many bases. The country's own rule is three bases, not six, because each leg takes 3–5 hours by road. Two bases in a week, three in ten days, four in two weeks is realistic.
Step 2: match the base to the trip. Volcano and rainforest: La Fortuna, with Monteverde as the second stop. Beach and sun: Guanacaste, especially if you fly into Liberia. Wildlife and a national park with a beach: Manuel Antonio, based in Quepos. Cheaper, wetter, surf-focused: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca on the Caribbean. City food and a flight buffer: San José or San Pedro de Montes de Oca.
Step 3: pick the property type. Hostels and guesthouses suit backpackers at US$18–35 a bed. Mid-range hotels and lodges at US$60–120 a room are the default. Eco-lodges and resorts at US$200–500 add guides, meals and location. Near parks, paying more usually buys walking distance to the gate, which saves a car and a parking fee.
Step 4: check the practical bits before booking. Confirm whether the rate includes the 13% VAT and 10% service charge, whether breakfast is included, and whether the road in needs a 4x4 in green season. In Tortuguero there are no roads, so you arrive by boat or small plane and most lodges sell full-board packages.
Step 5: book. Reserve 2–4 months ahead for December–April and holiday weeks; 2–3 weeks is usually enough in green season, and walk-ins still work in low season outside the parks.
- Book the first and last night first: they anchor the flights.
- For park towns, filter by walking distance to the entrance, not by star rating.
- Ask about road access and parking before paying a deposit.
- Confirm VAT and service charge are included in the quoted rate.
Notes and pitfalls
Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Central America, and lodging is where that shows. The same US$100 buys a simple room in a beach town or a cabin with a view in the mountains.
Distances look short on the map but take longer than expected. A base that is 40 km from a park can be two hours on gravel in the wet season. Choose the town, then the property inside it.
Rental-car deposits of US$1,000–5,000 are blocked on a credit card if you decline the rental company's collision cover, so check your limit before you book a car-dependent stay.
Tortuguero and some mountain lodges are effectively package stays: meals and boat transfers are bundled. Compare the package price, not the room rate.
US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, with change often given in colones. Cards work at most hotels and tour operators; carry cash for small sodas and parking.
| Trap | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Booking six one-night stops | Cut to three bases and stay 3–4 nights each |
| Assuming a cheap room near a park | Check the walk or drive to the gate and parking |
| Ignoring the wet-season road | Ask the property if a 4x4 is needed |
| Comparing room rate only | Compare total with meals, transfers and tax |
| Leaving peak weeks late | Book 2–4 months ahead for December–April |
Questions people ask
Where is the best area to stay in Costa Rica?
For a first trip, La Fortuna for Arenal, then Manuel Antonio or Guanacaste on the Pacific, plus Monteverde or Puerto Viejo. Beach-focused travellers can stay in Guanacaste alone; city and day-trip travellers do better in the Central Valley.
How much does a hotel cost in Costa Rica?
2026 estimates: dorm beds US$18–35, mid-range double rooms US$60–120, eco-lodges and resorts US$200–500. Green season often cuts rates 20–40%. Confirm whether 13% VAT and 10% service charge are included.
When should I book accommodation in Costa Rica?
Book 2–4 months ahead for late December to April, and earlier for holiday weeks. In green season, 2–3 weeks is usually enough, and walk-ins still work outside the parks.
Do I need a car to stay in these areas?
Not everywhere. La Fortuna, Quepos and beach towns work with shuttles and taxis. A car helps in Guanacaste and Monteverde. Rental cars add US$45–110 a day with mandatory insurance.
Is it cheaper to stay on the Caribbean side?
Usually yes. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca has lower room rates than Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio, but it is wetter and the drive from San José takes longer. Check road conditions in the rainy months.
How many bases should I book for a 10-day trip?
Three. Each leg takes 3–5 hours by road, so three bases of 3–4 nights give you more time in places and less time packing. Add a fourth only if you have two weeks.
