  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Hàn River centre audio walk in Da Nang. 6 stops: Hàn Market, Da Nang Cathedral, Museum of Cham Sculpture, Dragon Bridge, Asia Park and the Sun Wheel and Cồn Market. The city's one walkable pocket: Cham Museum in the morning, Hàn Market and the pink cathedral before noon, the riverside and Dragon Bridge after dark.

West bank of the Hàn River between the Hàn River Bridge (north) and the Dragon Bridge (south), inland to Trần Phú / Lê Duẩn; old Hải Châu district (Hải Châu ward since 2025 — check). Underfoot: wide riverside promenade; parked motorbikes on side streets; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Đà Nẵng looks new, and most of it is: bridges, beach towers and a tidy riverfront built in a generation. Underneath sits a much older story of a sheltered bay behind a mountain wall, a Cham coast of temples and sculptors, a French concession, a vast American airbase and a city that planned its way to prosperity.

Before you start: Weekend fire show at the Dragon Bridge: keep clear of the water spray zone if you carry a camera or phone. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Hàn Market

    Chợ Hàn

    Look for

    • Dried seafood and fish sauce
    • Upstairs fabric and tailors
    • Food stalls

Stop 1 of 6: Hàn Market. Locally, Chợ Hàn. Arrival point: 119 Trần Phú, corner of Bạch Đằng.

A 30-minute morning browse for dried squid, fish sauce, coffee and cheap tailoring upstairs; prices start high for visitors, so compare with Cồn Market or a supermarket.

Look for Dried seafood and fish sauce: Central-coast specialities; ask for sealed packing for flights. Look for Upstairs fabric and tailors: Cheaper than Hội An for simple clothes; allow 24–48 h. Look for Food stalls: Mì Quảng and bánh xèo at the back.

Hàn Market sits at the river end of the old commercial streets, the cathedral a few steps south on Trần Phú, and the Cham Museum at the southern tip beside the Dragon Bridge.

Tailored clothes need time: do not order on your last day. Tour buses late morning and mid-afternoon. Go before 11:00. Ask the price per kilo and counter at half.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Da Nang Cathedral. It's about 3 minutes on foot, about 200 metres to the south-west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Da Nang Cathedral

Nhà thờ Chính tòa Đà Nẵng (Nhà thờ Con Gà)

    Look for

    • Pink façade and bell tower
    • Lourdes grotto

Stop 2 of 6: Da Nang Cathedral. Locally, Nhà thờ Chính tòa Đà Nẵng (Nhà thờ Con Gà). Arrival point: 156 Trần Phú; visitor gate on Yên Bái at the back (check).

Ten minutes for the pink 1923 church locals call the 'rooster church' after its weathervane; photograph from Trần Phú, enter by the side gate outside Mass (check).

Look for Pink façade and bell tower: Built by the French in 1923; the rooster weathervane gives the nickname. Look for Lourdes grotto: Behind the church.

No photography inside during Mass. Photo groups mid-morning; Sunday Mass crowds. Photograph from across Trần Phú in the morning light. Dress as for any church; enter quietly by the side gate. Can I go inside? Usually outside Mass through the side gate; check the notice.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Museum of Cham Sculpture. It's about 10 minutes on foot, about 700 metres to the south. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Museum of Cham Sculpture

Bảo tàng Điêu khắc Chăm Đà Nẵng

    Look for

    • Mỹ Sơn gallery
    • Trà Kiệu gallery
    • Đồng Dương gallery

Stop 3 of 6: Museum of Cham Sculpture. Locally, Bảo tàng Điêu khắc Chăm Đà Nẵng. Arrival point: 02 2 Tháng 9 street, west end of the Dragon Bridge.

The best reason to spend a morning in Đà Nẵng itself: an hour among the world's largest collection of Cham sandstone carving; go before Mỹ Sơn, not after, so the ruins make sense.

Look for Mỹ Sơn gallery: Altars and linga pedestals from the temple valley you may visit next. Look for Trà Kiệu gallery: Dancing apsaras on the 7th-century altar pedestal. Look for Đồng Dương gallery: Buddhist period, 9th–10th century; heavier, stern figures.

The collection that explains Mỹ Sơn. Founded by the French School of the Far East (EFEO) in 1915 and opened in 1919, the museum gathered sculptures from Cham sites across central Vietnam.

Tour groups mid-morning; quiet at opening and after 15:00. Do not touch the sandstone; oils damage it.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Dragon Bridge. It's about 2 minutes on foot, about 400 metres to the east. Route: Cross the road. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  5. 4. Dragon Bridge

    Cầu Rồng

    Look for

    • Lights
    • Fire and water show
    • Carp-dragon statue

Stop 4 of 6: Dragon Bridge. Locally, Cầu Rồng. Arrival point: West end at the Cham Museum, or the east end on the Sơn Trà side.

See it lit after 19:00; on weekend nights the dragon's head breathes fire and then water (commonly 21:00 — check). Watch from the riverside or the east bank, not on the bridge deck.

Look for Lights: The 666 m bridge (opened 2013) changes colour every evening. Look for Fire and water show: Weekend nights from the dragon's head at the east end. Look for Carp-dragon statue: On the east bank just north; a water-spouting fish-dragon.

The Hàn River swing bridge of 2000, the Thuận Phước suspension bridge of 2009 and the Dragon Bridge of 2013 tied it to the centre, and the beach road filled with hotels. The Dragon Bridge, a steel arch shaped like a dragon, opened on the liberation anniversary in 2013 and breathes fire and water on weekend nights. Each weekend the Dragon Bridge's fire and water show draws crowds to both banks, and road races and triathlons use the beach road in spring.

During the show, the water spray soaks the east end: keep phones and cameras covered. Weekend show crowds from about 20:15; traffic jams on both ends.

Walk:Next, stop 5: Asia Park and the Sun Wheel. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk, about 9 minutes. The next stop is about 2.4 km to the south. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  6. 5. Asia Park and the Sun Wheel

Công viên Châu Á – Sun World Đà Nẵng Wonders

    Look for

    • Sun Wheel
    • Rides
    • Asian-themed gardens

Stop 5 of 6: Asia Park and the Sun Wheel. Locally, Công viên Châu Á – Sun World Đà Nẵng Wonders. Arrival point: Main gate at 1 Phan Đăng Lưu, Hòa Cường (check), beside the Trần Thị Lý bridge approach.

An amusement park on the west bank whose reason to go is the big Sun Wheel after dark, with the lit bridges below; worth an evening with children or on a rest day, skip it if you are short of time or it is raining.

Look for Sun Wheel: A Ferris wheel about 115 m high on a rooftop base (check): views over the Hàn River bridges, the Sơn Trà peninsula and the sea. Look for Rides: A roller coaster, drop tower and gentle rides for small children (check which are running). Look for Asian-themed gardens: Small pavilions and gardens themed on Asian countries; photo stops more than sights.

Rides and the wheel stop in storms and high wind; do not buy a ticket if lightning is forecast. Weekend and holiday evenings from about 19:00; school-holiday nights in June–August. Outside food may be refused at the gate (check).

Walk:Next, stop 6: Cồn Market. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk, about 12 minutes. The next stop is about 3.4 km to the north-west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  7. 6. Cồn Market

    Chợ Cồn

    Look for

    • Food lanes
    • Dried goods and spices
    • Clothes and fabric

Stop 6 of 6: Cồn Market. Locally, Chợ Cồn. Arrival point: Main entrance on Hùng Vương at the Ông Ích Khiêm corner, Hải Châu (check the number).

Đà Nẵng's big local market: an hour of snacking in the food lanes (bánh bèo, bánh xèo, gỏi, chè) and browsing cheap clothes and dried goods; go mid-morning or 14:00–17:00, carry small notes, skip it if crowds and wet floors bother you.

Look for Food lanes: Rows of stalls selling one or two dishes each: bánh bèo (steamed rice cakes), bánh nậm and bánh lọc, bánh xèo, papaya salad, snails and sweet chè. Look for Dried goods and spices: Dried squid, shrimp, chilli salt and coffee at prices closer to local than Hàn Market (compare before you buy). Look for Clothes and fabric: Cheap everyday clothes, hats and cloth by the metre upstairs and around the edges.

Ask the price before you sit at a food stall with no menu. Shoppers 07:00–10:00; students and office workers in the food lanes 15:00–18:00; quieter 12:00–14:00. Ask before photographing vendors close up.
