Damascus is Syria's capital and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its walled Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds the Umayyad Mosque, the covered Souk al-Hamidiyeh and Straight Street, mentioned in the Bible's Book of Acts. The country has been affected by civil war since 2011 and a change of government at the end of 2024; infrastructure, safety and entry rules can change with little notice. Get around
Yellow taxis and shared minibuses (microbuses) are the usual transport; agree a fare before you get in, since meters are not consistently used, and expect prices to change with fuel supply (confirm locally). Ride-hailing apps have little to no presence. Walking is easiest inside the Old City; do not rely on intercity buses without checking current security and checkpoints.

- Banking, card payments and ATMs are unreliable; carry cash (confirm which currency is practical locally) and expect limited international card acceptance.
- Power, water, mobile signal and internet access can be intermittent outside central areas: confirm with your accommodation.
- Checkpoints and curfews may apply outside the center; carry your passport and follow local guidance.
- Photography near government buildings, military sites or checkpoints can cause problems: ask first or do not photograph.
