Typical app rates; video quality settings move them a lot. Turn off photo backup and auto-play on mobile data to stay at the low end. With hotel wifi we count most streaming, calls and backups there.

Will it work, and how much data?

Four answers: phone, lock status, how you use data, and trip length. The size assumes Japan's 4G/5G networks and adds a 20% buffer.

Model lists are a guide: regional versions differ (for example, iPhones sold in mainland China have no eSIM). The settings check in step 1 below is the real test.

Who this applies to

Unlocked, eSIM-capable phones (most recent iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy models — check your settings): Data-only eSIM is the default choice.
Phones locked to a home carrier: An eSIM will not work; use the carrier's roaming pass or rent pocket Wi-Fi.
Groups of 3+ sharing, or laptop-heavy trips: Pocket Wi-Fi can be cheaper per person; one battery for everyone.

Check the phone is carrier-unlocked and lists 'Add eSIM' in settings.
Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi; most plans start counting days only when they first connect in Japan.
Label the lines (e.g. 'Home', 'Japan data') and set data to the travel line.
Turn off data roaming on your home line to avoid roaming charges.
Keep the home line on for bank SMS codes if your cards need them.
Save the provider's QR code and support link offline.

When it breaks: eSIM not connecting on arrival

Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line only.

Questions

Does an eSIM give me a Japanese phone number?

Data-only plans do not. Use messaging apps for calls; buy a voice plan only if a service needs a Japanese number.

Can I keep my home number for bank codes?

Yes. Keep the home line on for calls and SMS but turn off its data roaming; SMS usually still arrives.

Is pocket Wi-Fi better for a family?

For 3+ people sharing and staying together, often. It needs charging and returning, and everyone loses data when the carrier walks off.

Can I hotspot from the eSIM?

Most plans allow it; some block tethering or count it against a smaller cap. Check the plan page before buying.
