Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
- Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
- Iceland ↗Iceland is not in the EU but is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources.
- Iceland ↗Driving off marked roads is illegal and fined heavily; F-roads into the highlands open only in summer and require a 4x4.
- Iceland ↗Check the road authority's conditions map and the Met Office forecast every morning, and leave a travel plan on SafeTravel for hikes and remote drives.
East Iceland (Austurland) is the stretch of the Ring Road between Höfn and Mývatn, and it is where most Ring Road drivers run out of daylight. The south-east is a thin shelf of sand and glacier below Vatnajökull; the centre is a knot of fjord villages; inland Hérað is farmland around Lagarfljót lake, and it is one of the warmest corners of Iceland in summer. Two nights here turns a transit day into the best-value stop on the loop.

Night sequences
- 1 nights
- Höfn 1 — glacier lagoon and the south-east coast, then drive on
- 2 nights
- Höfn 1 + Egilsstaðir 1 — the minimum that covers the south-east and Hérað
- 3 nights
- Höfn 1 + Egilsstaðir 2 — adds Seyðisfjörður and a fjord village without a long driving day
- Höfn to Egilsstaðir is about 2.5 hours of driving without stops; with Stuðlagil or Hengifoss it becomes a full day.
- The fjord roads off Route 1 dead-end; each detour costs you the drive back out.
- Reindeer are on and beside the road in the east — slow down, especially at dusk.

- South-east coast (Höfn)
- Wettest and windiest part of the region; fog and rain off the glacier are common even in July.
- Hérað and the East Fjords
- Sheltered inland and among the warmest places in Iceland in summer; fjord villages are cooler and windier.
The Ring Road through the east is a summer drive. In winter, mountain passes close and the unpaved sections need real caution; build in a spare day.
