  • Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
  • Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
  • Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
  • Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.

Eastern Cibao is the Samaná Peninsula plus the coconut coast west of it. The peninsula's three towns sit 30–60 minutes apart on one road, so pick one base and day-trip the rest. Las Terrenas has the most beds, restaurants and nightlife; Las Galeras is smaller and quieter with the best beach access by boat; Samaná town is the ferry and whale-watching port. Whale season (mid-January to mid-March) is the one period when beds and boats sell out.

  • Samaná town to Las Terrenas is about an hour on a winding road — do not plan it as a quick hop.
  • Beach restaurants in Las Galeras quote in pesos; confirm the price per pound before the fish goes on the grill.
  • Hurricane season runs June to November; the peninsula is exposed and boats stop in bad weather.

Samaná Peninsula and north coast
December to April is drier and cooler; May to August is hot and humid with afternoon rain; September and October carry the highest hurricane risk. Whale season mid-January to mid-March is also the busiest stretch.

The peninsula catches trade-wind rain even in the dry season — short showers pass quickly. Sea temperature stays warm enough to swim all year.
