The Eastern Province is Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast: oil cities, a causeway to Bahrain, and one inland oasis, Al-Ahsa, that is the reason to come this far east. Khobar and Dammam are the practical bases — airport, hotels, corniche, causeway. Hofuf/Al-Ahsa is 1.5–2 h by car or about 2 h by train and deserves a night if you want the palm oasis and caves without rushing. Public transport inside the cities is thin; plan on taxis, ride-hailing or a rental car.
