- South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
- South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
- Nepal ↗Get visa information only from the Department of Immigration; visa-service lookalike sites charge extra, and the rules differ by nationality.
- Nepal ↗At stupas walk clockwise; at temples and homes remove shoes where there is a rack or a raised floor; cover shoulders and knees.
- Nepal ↗Carry Nepalese rupees in small notes: many stalls, taxis and tea shops are cash-only, and shops rarely take foreign notes.
- Nepal ↗Strikes (bandh) and protests can close roads without notice: check the news and your hotel the night before any airport or highway day.
The Eastern Tarai (Madhesh) is Nepal's eastern plains: flat, hot, farming country along the Indian border, with the country's oldest industrial belt around Biratnagar and a dense mix of Maithili, Bhojpuri and Tharu communities. It is not a sightseeing region in the Kathmandu or Pokhara sense. It earns a stop for three reasons: Janakpur's temples and Mithila painting, Koshi Tappu wildlife, and the Kakarbhitta land border with India. Two nights covers Janakpur; three lets you add Koshi Tappu or Biratnagar. Everything else is transit.

- 2 nights
- Janakpur 2 nights, arrive by road or air from Kathmandu
- 3 nights
- Janakpur 2 + Biratnagar 1, then Kakarbhitta for the border
- Do not plan the Eastern Tarai as a substitute for the Kathmandu Valley or Pokhara; the draw is cultural and wildlife, not mountain views.
- Monsoon (June–September) floods roads and makes the plains crossing slow; check conditions before travelling by bus.
- The India border at Kakarbhitta and Birgunj can be slow; allow extra time and keep documents handy.
