Elvas

Give Elvas one full day and one night: walk the walls and aqueduct in the morning, drive to Graça fort before 15:00, sleep inside the walls.

Elvas is a hilltop garrison town on the Spanish border, 8 km from the Guadiana and about 200 km from Lisbon. Its UNESCO listing covers the star-fort walls, the Amoreira Aqueduct and the two outlying forts. The old town is small and walkable; the forts are not, so a car or a taxi changes what you can see in a day. Most travellers come for one night between Évora and Spain, or as a slow stop on the Alto Alentejo circuit.

Get around

Everything inside the walls is walkable in 15 minutes. The two forts sit outside: Santa Luzia is about 1 km (0.6 mi) from the centre, Graça about 3 km (1.9 mi) uphill. No city bus covers them usefully, so use a car, a taxi or a long walk with water. The train station is 3 km (1.9 mi) out.
