Summary by trip length, season and budget

Georgia rewards a short list. Almost every first trip runs through Tbilisi, and the two easiest add-ons are a mountain day north to Kazbegi and a wine day east into Kakheti. Longer trips head west by train to Kutaisi and Batumi, or deeper into Svaneti for towers and treks.

Use the table to pick stops by how many nights you actually have, then check the season: highland roads and Tusheti are summer-only, the Black Sea coast is a summer city, and spring and autumn are the comfortable window for Tbilisi, Kakheti and Kutaisi.

The places, in the order most trips use them

Tbilisi is the hub and the reason most people come. The old town, the sulphur bath district of Abanotubani, Narikala fortress above it and the National Museum fill three or four days, and the wine bars around Fabrika and Sololaki fill the evenings. Take the cable car up to Narikala and walk down through Sololaki.

Mtskheta, the old capital, is 30 minutes from Tbilisi and pairs Svetitskhoveli cathedral with Jvari church on the ridge above the river. It works as a half-day on the way north to Kazbegi rather than a separate stop.

Kazbegi, properly Stepantsminda, sits under Mt Kazbek with Gergeti Trinity Church on the hill above the village. One or two nights is enough for the church walk and a valley hike; the road from Tbilisi via the Georgian Military Highway is the trip. June to September is the window.

Kakheti is the wine region east of Tbilisi, with Sighnaghi on its ridge and Telavi as the working town. One or two nights covers a couple of wineries, Alaverdi monastery and the walled town of Sighnaghi. September and October are harvest months.

Kutaisi is the western hub and a low-cost airport city: Gelati monastery, Bagrati cathedral and the nearby caves and canyons. One or two nights, then continue west.

Batumi is the Black Sea resort: a long boulevard, a botanical garden and summer nightlife. Two nights in June to September; outside summer it is quiet.

Svaneti, based in Mestia with a day trip to Ushguli, is the trekking region: tower villages, glaciers and 3–4 nights minimum. July to September only for most visitors. Tusheti is remoter still, reached by a mountain road, and needs three nights in the same window.

Vardzia, the cliff monastery in the south, fits as one night between Kutaisi and the Armenian border, May to October.

  • Tbilisi — 3–4 nights, the base
  • Mtskheta — half-day from Tbilisi
  • Kazbegi — 1–2 nights, Jun–Sep
  • Kakheti (Sighnaghi, Telavi) — 1–2 nights, Sep–Oct
  • Kutaisi — 1–2 nights, May–Jun and Sep–Oct
  • Batumi — 2 nights, Jun–Sep
  • Svaneti (Mestia, Ushguli) — 3–4 nights, Jul–Sep
  • Tusheti — 3 nights, Jul–Sep
  • Vardzia — 1 night, May–Oct

What changes the plan

Season is the biggest lever. Kazbegi, Svaneti and Tusheti are summer places; snow closes high roads and some guesthouses outside the window. Tbilisi, Kakheti and Kutaisi are at their best in late spring and early autumn, when days are mild and the harvest is on.

Roads and transport decide the rest. Trains run west from Tbilisi to Kutaisi and Batumi, which makes the western loop easy without a car. Mountains are marshrutka or hired-car territory; a driver also solves wine tasting in Kakheti, where everyone in the group wants to drink.

Two regions are off the table. Abkhazia and South Ossetia are not reachable from Georgia and travel there is restricted; do not plan them into a route. Check current government advice before you book anything near the administrative boundary lines.

Money and dress are small but real: carry some cash for villages and marshrutkas, and cover shoulders and knees, and women a headscarf, for churches and monasteries. Travel insurance that covers hiking and mountain roads is worth arranging before the trekking regions.

  • Summer (Jun–Sep): mountains and coast, book guesthouses ahead
  • Spring and autumn: Tbilisi, Kakheti, Kutaisi at their best
  • Winter: Tbilisi and ski areas; high passes closed
  • Skip: Abkhazia and South Ossetia — not accessible from Georgia
