Summary table: what to pick by trip length and month

Ghana rewards a short, tight route. Roads are slow, so each move costs most of a day. The table below matches the country's ranked destinations to how many nights you have and when you are travelling.

Nights are the country page's planning figures; treat them as minimums, not exact.

Step by step: how to build the route

Start in Accra. Two or three nights covers Jamestown and its lighthouse, Makola market before noon, Black Star Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, plus Osu for food and the art scene. Walk Jamestown with a local guide in the morning.

Move west to Cape Coast and Elmina for two or three nights. Take the guided tour in each castle: Cape Coast in the morning, Elmina after lunch. Kakum's canopy walk is a half-day from Cape Coast and needs no overnight unless you want the early light.

Then choose one of two branches. Branch A is Kumasi, two nights: Manhyia Palace Museum, Kejetia market, Bonwire for kente and the UNESCO-listed Asante traditional buildings at Besease and nearby villages. Time a visit for Akwasidae, the Asante festival held roughly every six weeks (check the calendar). Branch B is the north: fly Accra–Tamale, transfer to Mole National Park for two or three nights of walking safaris, best January to April.

With 10 days or more, add the Volta Region out of Ho — Wli falls, Tafi Atome monkeys, Mount Afadja — or the western coast at Busua for surf and the Nzulezo stilt village. Ada Foah suits a single night on the Volta estuary. Bolgatanga and Sirigu, in the far north, are for second trips with time to spare.

Fly the long legs where you can. Kumasi–Accra and Tamale–Accra are short flights that replace five- to six-hour drives. Otherwise leave early and finish before dark.

Notes and things that change the plan

Rain decides the north. Mole is at its best in the dry months, January to April; the far north is driest November to February. The coast and Accra work well in August as well as the main dry season.

Roads are the real constraint. Distances look short on a map and take far longer than expected, so build in slack and avoid night driving. If you are short on days, cut a destination rather than a night.

Entry rules depend on your passport, and the visa situation for Ghana has changed in recent years — confirm current requirements before you book flights. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth having for the northern parks and any long road legs.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Ghana?

Accra, Cape Coast and Elmina for the castles, Kumasi for Asante culture, Mole National Park for elephants, and the Volta Region for waterfalls and hills. Busua and Ada Foah are the beach options. Most first trips combine Accra, the castles and either Kumasi or Mole.

How many days do you need in Ghana?

Seven days covers Accra, Cape Coast and Elmina, and Kumasi. Ten days adds Mole National Park in the north. Fourteen days lets you add the Volta Region or the western coast. Roads are slow, so each extra stop costs most of a day.

Which areas of Ghana suit a first visit?

The Accra–Cape Coast–Kumasi triangle is the easiest first route: short flights or day-length drives, the main historical sites and the strongest hotel choice. The north and Volta Region are better on a second trip or with 10+ days.

When is the best time to visit Ghana?

November to March is the main dry season and suits most of the country. August also works well for Accra and the coast. Mole National Park is best January to April. The Volta Region's waterfalls are fullest June to October, while hiking there is better November to February.

Do I need a visa for Ghana?

It depends on your passport, and the rules have changed in recent years. Check the current requirements with Ghana's immigration service or your nearest embassy before booking. Allow time for processing, and carry proof of yellow fever vaccination if required.

Is it worth going north to Mole National Park?

Yes, if you have at least 10 days and travel between January and April. Fly Accra–Tamale to avoid a very long drive, then transfer to the park for two or three nights of walking safaris. On a seven-day trip, skip it.
