Rules in force · 11Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…The frontier with Spain and the runway crossing can hold …
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
- Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
- Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
- Gibraltar ↗Gibraltar sets its own entry rules; it is outside the Schengen area and the EU customs union. Check the Gibraltar government and your own government's advice for your passport.
- Gibraltar ↗Since 15 July 2026 the land frontier with Spain has no routine passport checks; Schengen checks by Spanish officers happen at Gibraltar's airport and port instead. The arrangement is new: check the current procedure before you rely on past experience.
- Gibraltar ↗Leaving Gibraltar into Spain means re-entering the Schengen area; if your Schengen stay is limited, count the days.
- Gibraltar town and Main Street ↗Leave at least an hour of buffer around the frontier and the runway crossing before a flight or a bus.
- Gibraltar city ↗The frontier with Spain and the runway crossing can hold you for minutes to over an hour; do not plan a tight connection on either side of it.
- Gibraltar city ↗Gibraltar sets its own entry rules and is outside the Schengen area; check the Gibraltar government and your own government's advice for your passport.

Know before you go
- This is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Gibraltar. It stands on the site of the old mosque, converted to a church after the Spanish took the town in 1462, and it has been rebuilt more than once since, notably after the sieges.
- The exterior is modest and the inside is calm and cool; the visit is short, so it works as a rest stop rather than a destination.
- Donations are welcome; a small coin is usual. Mass times change: check the door before going in.
