Greater Geelong is Victoria's second city plus the Bellarine Peninsula and the You Yangs, all within about 40 minutes of each other by car. Sleep in Geelong for trains, events and restaurants; sleep on the Bellarine (Queenscliff, Portarlington) for quiet coastal nights and wineries. Without a car the peninsula is slow, so pick one base and day-trip the rest.
