  • Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
  • Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
  • Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Fill in the free e-Ticket form on the official migration site (eticket.migracion.gob.do) for arrival and departure; ignore sites that charge for it.
  • Dominican Republic ↗The land border with Haiti is not a tourist route: do not plan overland travel into Haiti.
  • Dominican Republic ↗Avoid driving at night outside cities: unlit roads, motorbikes without lights and animals make it the main risk.

Greater Santo Domingo is the capital plus its coastal ring: Boca Chica about 30 minutes east, Juan Dolio about 45–60 minutes east, and Baní and its dunes roughly 1.5 hours west. The city holds the colonial core, the Malecón and the museums; the coast holds the beach days. You do not need a car for the Zona Colonial, but you do for the beaches and Baní. Two nights covers the historic centre; three lets you add one beach day. Best known for the Zona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage site with the first cathedral, fortress and university in the Americas, plus the Malecón and the Columbus lighthouse.

  • Playa Caribe near Juan Dolio has strong waves and currents; it is not a swimming beach for weak swimmers.
  • Do not walk the Malecón or Zona Colonial side streets alone late at night; take a taxi or ride-hail after dark.
  • Afternoon traffic leaving Santo Domingo eastward can double the drive to Boca Chica or Juan Dolio.

Santo Domingo and the coast
Hot and humid year-round; the rainy season runs roughly May to November, with the heaviest rain and storm risk August–October. Coastal breezes make the beach towns a few degrees cooler than the city.

December to April is the driest and most comfortable window; it is also the peak season, so book the Zona Colonial ahead.

Verdict first

Ride-hailing in the capital

buy

Use it for the Zona Colonial, Malecón and airport runs; cheaper and easier than negotiating street taxis.

Car hire

check

Only worth it for Boca Chica, Juan Dolio and Baní; the Zona Colonial is walkable and parking is a hassle.

Organised day tours

check

Useful for Baní and the dunes if you do not want to drive; compare operators before booking.
