Greenland

Best places to visit in Greenland: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, go to Ilulissat for the UNESCO Icefjord and icebergs, then add Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq — two hubs, 3–4 nights each. South Greenland and Tasiilaq reward a second trip. There are no roads between towns, so every move is a flight or boat and weather days are part of the plan.

Summary: which place, which month, what it costs

Greenland is one destination with several distinct bases. Match the place to your month and your tolerance for weather delays, then budget for flights between towns, which are the single biggest cost.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for one person, excluding the flight from Europe or North America.

Step by step: building the trip

Step 1 — pick one or two hubs. Ilulissat is the strongest single choice: the Icefjord is UNESCO-listed, the Sermermiut trail starts in town, and evening boats run in the light of June and July. Pair it with Nuuk if you want museums and cafés, or with Kangerlussuaq if you want to stand on the ice sheet and look for musk oxen.

Step 2 — set the season. Ilulissat works in spring (Mar–Apr) for sledding on sea ice and in summer (Jun–Sep) for boats and hiking. Nuuk is a summer town. Kangerlussuaq gives northern lights in Feb–Apr and ice sheet access in Jun–Sep. Tasiilaq is realistically a July–August trip.

Step 3 — count nights, not days. Give Ilulissat 4 nights, Nuuk 2–3, Kangerlussuaq 2, South Greenland 4, Sisimiut 2, Tasiilaq 3. Add a buffer night in Nuuk before your flight home: weather cancels legs, and a missed connection is the most common way a Greenland trip goes wrong.

Step 4 — book internal flights and boats early. Every inter-town move is a flight or a boat. Summer seats sell out months ahead, and boat schedules in South Greenland change with conditions.

Step 5 — build in a weather day. Fog, wind and ice delay flights and boats in every season. Treat a spare day as part of the itinerary, not a luxury.

  • 7 days: Nuuk (2) → Ilulissat (4) → Nuuk buffer (1)
  • 10 days: Nuuk (3) → Kangerlussuaq (2) → Ilulissat (4) → Nuuk buffer (1)
  • 14 days: Nuuk (3) → Ilulissat (4) → South Greenland (5) → Nuuk buffer (2)

Notes before you book

Greenland is not a road-trip country. Outside a few short town tracks and the Kangerlussuaq ice sheet road, you move by air or sea, and schedules are thin. Check that Kangerlussuaq still has the connection you need — routes shifted after Nuuk's airport opened — and treat the Qaqortoq airport in South Greenland as a 2026 change to verify, not a certainty.

Costs are high and mostly fixed: accommodation, tours and internal flights. Food and drink in towns add up quickly. Travel insurance that covers remote-area evacuation and trip interruption is worth arranging before you pay for non-refundable flights.

Daylight is extreme. Around midsummer the sun barely sets in Ilulissat and Nuuk, which is the point of going; in winter, plan around a few hours of light. Pack layers, waterproofs and insect head nets for the mosquito season in the brief green weeks.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Greenland?

Ilulissat first, for the UNESCO Icefjord, iceberg boats and whales. Add Nuuk for the capital's museum and fjord, or Kangerlussuaq for the ice sheet and musk oxen. South Greenland, Sisimiut and Tasiilaq are strong second-trip choices.

How many days do you need in Greenland?

Seven days covers Nuuk and Ilulissat with a buffer night. Ten days adds Kangerlussuaq. Fourteen days allows West and South Greenland. Give each hub 2–4 nights and keep a spare day for weather delays.

Which areas of Greenland suit a first visit?

West Greenland. Ilulissat and Nuuk are the easiest to reach, with the most tours and the shortest internal flights. Kangerlussuaq is a simple add-on. East and South Greenland need more time and more flexibility.

Do I need to fly between towns in Greenland?

Yes. There are no roads linking towns, so every move is a domestic flight, helicopter or boat. Book summer seats early and plan a buffer day before your international flight home.

When is the best time to visit Greenland?

June to September for boats, hiking and the midnight sun. March to April for sledding, sea ice and northern lights. Kangerlussuaq also works February to April for aurora. Tasiilaq is mainly a July–August destination.

How much do tours in Greenland cost?

As a 2026 estimate, iceberg and fjord boat trips run roughly 700–1,200 DKK, ice sheet tours 700–1,000 DKK, and dog-sled or ski days 900–1,500 DKK. Prices vary by operator and season — confirm when booking.
