Grimsby
Grimsby, Ontario
One night is enough: use Grimsby as a quieter, cheaper base between Hamilton and St. Catharines for the escarpment trail, the lakefront cottages and the wineries.
Grimsby is a town of about 27,000 on the south shore of Lake Ontario, halfway between Hamilton and St. Catharines on the QEW. It is the western gateway to the Niagara wine region, with a walkable Main Street downtown, escarpment trails at Beamer Falls and a cluster of painted "gingerbread" cottages by the lake. Sights are small and spread out; most travellers come for a half-day or one night while touring the Niagara Peninsula.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- The GO bus stop at Casablanca Boulevard is about 3.4 km from downtown: arrange a taxi or microtransit transfer.
- Beamer Falls trails can be icy or muddy outside summer; the accessible section still needs care in wet weather.
- The gingerbread cottages are private homes: view them from the street only.
- Wine-country tastings need a designated driver or a booked tour; police run RIDE checks on the QEW.
Very safe for a small Ontario town; the real risks are highway driving on the QEW, icy escarpment trails in winter and drinking at wineries without a designated driver.
