  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Church Street, City Hall & Par-la-Ville audio walk in Hamilton. 3 stops: City Hall and Arts Centre, Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and Par-la-Ville Park and Perot Post Office. Late-morning cluster: City Hall and the arts centre, the cathedral and Par-la-Ville Park; most of it is indoors or shaded, so it suits the hot hours.

Church Street, City Hall, Par-la-Ville Park and the streets between (approximate box). Underfoot: paved streets and park paths; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Hamilton is one of the smallest capitals a visitor will meet: a grid of a dozen streets on a harbour, in the middle of a mid-Atlantic island of about 20 square miles. It was planned rather than grown, and it still behaves like a planned place, with offices on the front, a cathedral and city hall one block back, and a park on the hill.

Before you start: Museums and City Hall close on Sundays. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. City Hall and Arts Centre

    City Hall

Stop 1 of 3: City Hall and Arts Centre. Locally, City Hall. Arrival point: Church Street, Hamilton.

The civic building that also holds the national art gallery: an indoor 45–60 minutes for the hottest or wettest hours.

Opening days and entry fees are not printed until verified; closed on Sundays in most cases. Quiet on weekday mornings. Smart-casual; cover up, no swimwear. Is it a good rain-day plan? Yes: it is indoors and next to the cathedral, but check that it is open, since days are limited. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. It's about 3 minutes on foot, about 150 metres to the south-east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity

Stop 2 of 3: Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. Arrival point: Church Street, Hamilton.

The Anglican cathedral on Church Street with a climbable tower: 30–45 minutes, best in the morning, with the tower for the widest view of the harbour.

The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, on Church Street, was finished in 1911 after an earlier building burned down; check the date locally.

Cover shoulders and knees inside; no swimwear. Quietest on weekday mornings; busy when a cruise ship is in. Shoulders and knees covered. Do not walk around during a service. Is the tower worth it? On a clear day yes for the harbour view; skip it if you have knee trouble or the day is hazy.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Par-la-Ville Park and Perot Post Office. It's about 6 minutes on foot, about 250 metres to the west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Par-la-Ville Park and Perot Post Office

    Par-la-Ville Park

Stop 3 of 3: Par-la-Ville Park and Perot Post Office. Locally, Par-la-Ville Park. Arrival point: Par-la-Ville Road, off Queen Street, Hamilton.

A small shaded garden in the middle of the grid with a historic post office: a 20–30 minute rest between Church Street and Front Street, and a free bench in the shade.

Reid Street is the main shopping and office street; Church Street holds City Hall and the Bermuda National Gallery, the cathedral and, a short walk west, Par-la-Ville Park with its 19th-century post office.

Quiet through the day; a lunch spot for office workers. Casual; cover up away from the beach. Is it a sight or a rest? Mostly a rest with one small piece of postal history; do not plan more than half an hour.
