Hartland
Stop for 2–3 hours to walk the world's longest covered bridge, then move on: Hartland has no night of its own to fill.
Hartland is a village of about 950 people on the Saint John River, 25 km west of Woodstock and 105 km west of Fredericton. Its one draw is the Hartland Covered Bridge, 391 m long and the longest covered bridge in the world, a National Historic Site you can drive or walk across. Everything else — a library in a 1912 post office, a chip-factory tour, a golf course — fills an afternoon at most. Treat it as a half-day stop on the Trans-Canada Highway, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- The bridge is single-lane: wait for oncoming traffic and watch for pedestrians on the 1945 walkway.
- Winter ice and snow make the bridge and river roads slippery; check conditions before driving in from Fredericton or Woodstock.
- The potato-chip factory tour does not run on many winter Fridays: check before you drive out to Waterville.
- Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on river back roads.
Very safe. The real risks are the single-lane bridge, winter ice on river roads and long drives after dark with moose and deer on the shoulder.

Most services are seasonal: the visitor centre runs mid-May to early October and the chip-factory tour has shorter winter hours.
