Hooghly is a strip of former European colonies — Portuguese, Dutch, French, Danish — strung along the Hooghly River 45 minutes north of Kolkata. Each town kept a few buildings and a different feel. Sleep in Chinsurah (Dutch quarter, river promenade) and day-trip the rest by local train or rickshaw. Two nights cover the main sights; a third lets you add Tarakeswar temple.
