Where to stay in Iceland: best areas and types of hotel
For a first trip, base 2 nights in Reykjavík (101 or 105 for walkability), then move along the south coast: Vík for waterfalls and black beaches, Höfn for Jökulsárlón. Book summer rooms 3–6 months ahead. Winter: stay southwest and keep buffer nights for storms.

Summary by area, month and budget
Pick the base by what you want to see, not by hotel quality: Iceland's distances decide your trip. The table below matches the country plan (Reykjavík 2 nights, then the south coast) to areas, seasons and rough nightly costs.
| Area | Best months | Good for | Nightly budget (2026 estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reykjavík (101, 105) | All year | City food, pools, day tours, no car needed | Dorm 7,000–12,000 ISK; double 25,000–45,000 ISK |
| Reykjanes / Keflavík | All year | Late arrival, early flight, Blue Lagoon area | Double 20,000–35,000 ISK |
| Vík í Mýrdal | May–Sep | Waterfalls, black beach, glacier walks | Double 25,000–45,000 ISK |

| Akureyri | Jun–Sep | North Ring Road, Mývatn, whale watching | Double 22,000–40,000 ISK |

| Ísafjörður / Westfjords | Jun–Aug | Remote fjords, few beds, book early | Double 20,000–40,000 ISK |
| Borgarnes / West Iceland | May–Sep | Snæfellsnes loop, easy drive from Reykjavík | Double 22,000–40,000 ISK |
Rates are bands, not quotes; summer weekends and festival dates run above them. Check the exact price at booking.
How to choose, step by step
1. Fix your route first. Iceland's south coast is roughly 4–5 hours of driving from Reykjavík to Höfn without stops, so a single base cannot cover it. Two nights in Reykjavík plus two or three moving bases beats one hotel with long daily drives.
2. Choose the district in Reykjavík. Postcode 101 (Miðborg, the centre) puts you within walking distance of Hallgrímskirkja, the harbour and most restaurants; 105 is quieter and slightly cheaper; 108 and 110 (Háaleiti, Fossvogur) are residential and need a bus or car. If you have no car, stay in 101 or 105.
3. Decide hotel type. Guesthouses and farm stays are the Icelandic middle ground: private rooms, shared or private bathrooms, often breakfast. Hostels (Reykjavík, Vík, Akureyri, Höfn) sell dorm beds and private rooms. Apartments suit families and self-caterers, since eating out is the biggest cost after the car.
4. Book the car and the rooms together. In summer, rental cars and beds sell out in the same weeks; a room without a car on the south coast leaves you stuck.
5. Add one buffer night. Weather closes roads in winter and can delay summer highland plans. A spare night near Vík or Reykjavík is cheaper than rebooking a flight.
- No car: Reykjavík 101/105 plus guided day tours
- South coast: Vík 2 nights, Höfn 1 night
- Ring Road in 8–10 days: add Akureyri or Mývatn, and Egilsstaðir for the east
- Winter: stay southwest, keep nights flexible
- Budget lever: guesthouse + shared bathroom + supermarket dinners
Notes and pitfalls
Prices are per room, not per person, and almost always include VAT and, in many rural places, a made-up bed and cleaning fee. Ask whether linen and towels are included; some budget stays charge extra.
Breakfast is often the best-value meal of the day in rural guesthouses. In Reykjavík, apartments with kitchens cut food costs sharply — see the food and drink page for what a supermarket basket costs.
Camping is legal only in designated campsites, and wild camping with a vehicle is restricted; if you plan to sleep in a campervan, book campsites in advance in July and August.
Midges are a real nuisance around Mývatn in July; a room with sealed windows and a head net matters more than the view.
Northern lights are a winter bonus, not a booking reason: you need dark, clear skies and luck, so choose a base you would enjoy in daylight too.
- Confirm check-in hours: rural receptions often close by 21:00
- Ask about hot tubs and pools — many guesthouses have one
- Verify cancellation terms; storm cancellations are common in winter
- Check whether the room has a private bathroom before you book

Questions people ask
Where is the best area to stay in Iceland?
For a first trip, Reykjavík for 2 nights (districts 101 or 105 if you have no car), then the south coast: Vík for 2 nights and Höfn for 1. Add Akureyri or Mývatn only if you are doing the north or the full Ring Road.
How much does a hotel cost in Iceland?
As a 2026 estimate, a guesthouse double runs about 18,000–28,000 ISK, a mid-range hotel 30,000–45,000 ISK, and summer peak or festival dates more. Hostel dorm beds are roughly 6,000–12,000 ISK. Check current rates when booking.
When should I book accommodation in Iceland?
For June to August and the New Year period, book 3–6 months ahead, and book the rental car in the same session. Winter weekends need 4–8 weeks. Rural guesthouses and Westfjords beds sell out first because supply is small.
Should I stay in Reykjavík or near the airport?
Stay near Keflavík or Reykjanes only for a late arrival or an early departure. Otherwise Reykjavík gives you restaurants, pools and tour pickups, and the airport is about 45–50 minutes away by car or Flybus.
Is it cheaper to stay outside Reykjavík?
Usually yes. Rural guesthouses and farm stays cost less per night than central Reykjavík hotels, but you need a car, and fuel plus one extra driving day can cancel the saving. Compare the total, not the room rate.
Do I need to tip or pay extra fees at Icelandic hotels?
Tipping is not expected. Service and VAT are included in the quoted rate, but some rural stays add a cleaning or linen fee per room, so read the booking terms before you confirm.
