Treat Incheon as an airport city: use a long layover or arrival day for Chinatown and the old port, then move on to Seoul, about an hour away; stay a night only for a very early flight.
Incheon is South Korea's third-largest city and home to Incheon International Airport, one of Asia's main hub airports. Its old port area has Korea's only Chinatown, dating from an 1883 treaty port, next to a preserved colonial-era street. The newer Songdo district adds a planned waterfront business area with parks. Most visitors see it as a half day before or after Seoul rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
Incheon Subway lines 1 and 2, plus Seoul Metro line 1 to Incheon Station, cover the main areas; a T-money card works on all of them (base fare about ₩1,600, 2026 estimate, check). AREX express reaches Seoul Station in about 43 min; the all-stop AREX is cheaper (about ₩4,750, check) and slower (about 1 h). Taxis start around ₩4,800 and bus routes cover gaps.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name
- Handing things: Two hands for money, cards, gifts and drinks; avoid: Passing things with one hand to older people
- Subway: Quiet voices, bags off seats, queue at the marked lines; avoid: Priority and pink pregnancy seats, even when empty
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring fruit or a boxed gift; refuse once before accepting; avoid: Writing names in red ink — it is used for the dead
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees; bow at the main hall; avoid: Stepping on thresholds; loud talk; pointing at Buddha statues

Scams and watch-outs
- Incheon airport has two terminals linked by a free shuttle bus (about 15-20 min): confirm which terminal your airline uses before a tight transfer.
- Chinatown and the nearby murals get very crowded on weekends and public holidays.
- Songdo and the port are spread out and not walkable between sights: budget time for buses or taxis.
- Ferries to the west islands and Ganghwa buses can be cancelled in fog and strong wind; check before you go.
- Late-night AREX and metro services end around midnight; confirm the last train if you land late.
- Airport taxis and unofficial drivers may overcharge; use the official stand or a metered taxi.
Incheon is safe for travellers; the practical risk is a missed transfer at the airport, so allow extra time.
