Indonesia
Indonesia itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks
For 7 days, do Bali only: 4 nights in Ubud, then 3 nights at a south Bali beach near the airport. Two islands in a week means a lost day to flights. Add the Gili islands at 10 days, or Java's volcanoes at 14; 3 weeks reaches Flores or Raja Ampat.

Route summary by trip length
Nights per stop, so you can copy a route straight into a booking sheet. All routes start and end at an airport with direct international flights where possible.
| Days | Route | Nights | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Ubud → south Bali beach | 4 + 3 | First trip, one island, no internal flights |
| 10 | Ubud → Gili Air → Sanur or Uluwatu | 4 + 3 + 3 | Beach and snorkelling without Java's travel days |
| 14 | Yogyakarta → Bromo → Ijen → Ubud → Bali beach | 3 + 1 + 1 + 5 + 4 | Temples and two volcano sunrises, then rest |
| 21 | 14-day route + Labuan Bajo and Komodo | 3–4 extra | Reefs and dragons, one more flight each way |
Nights are a starting point; shift one night between Ubud and the beach to suit your flight times.
7 days: Bali, two bases
Fly into Denpasar (DPS) and go straight to Ubud, 4 nights. Ubud is the base for rice terraces, temples, dance performances and food, and a driver can cover the day trips from there. Keep the second base on the south coast for the last 3 nights, close to the airport, so the departure morning is short.
Do not try to add Yogyakarta or the Gili islands to a 7-day trip. Each island hop costs most of a day between the flight, the transfer and the check-in, and you would see both places badly. If Borobudur is the reason you came to Indonesia, flip the plan: 7 days on Java only, with 3 nights in Yogyakarta and the rest in Jakarta or Bandung.
- Day 1: land at DPS, transfer to Ubud (roughly 1.5–2 hours by car)
- Days 2–4: Ubud — terraces early, one temple day, one free day
- Day 5: move to the south coast, stop at a temple on the way
- Days 6–7: beach, then airport
10 days: add the Gili islands
Same Bali shape, with 3 nights on Gili Air between Ubud and the beach. Fast boats run from Padang Bai and Serangan to the Gilis; crossings take around 1.5–2.5 hours depending on the operator and sea state. Boats cancel in swell, so keep the last night near DPS and do not book a tight connection.
Gili Air is the quiet middle island: no cars, snorkelling and diving offshore, and easy day access to Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. Lombok's Senggigi and Kuta are a further boat and drive if you want a quieter coast instead.
14 days: Java to Bali
This is the classic overland route and the best use of two weeks. Fly into Yogyakarta (YIA) or Jakarta (CGK), spend 3 nights in Yogyakarta for Borobudur, Prambanan and the sultan's palace, then move east by train and car to Bromo (1 night) and Ijen near Banyuwangi (1 night). Cross by ferry at Ketapang–Gilimanuk into Bali, then 5 nights in Ubud and 4 on the beach, flying out of DPS.
Two warnings. Volcano viewpoints are weather-dependent and access can close; check PVMBG levels the day before. And the Bromo and Ijen legs are usually done as pre-dawn drives, so build in a slow day afterwards rather than stacking a third sunrise.
| Leg | Typical time | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Yogyakarta → Probolinggo / Bromo area | 8–10 hours | Train then car |
| Bromo → Banyuwangi (Ijen) | 5–7 hours | Car |
| Banyuwangi → Ubud | 4–6 hours | Ferry plus car |
| Ubud → DPS airport | 1.5–2 hours | Car |
21 days: add Flores and Komodo
Three weeks lets you keep the 14-day route and add Labuan Bajo, the port for Komodo National Park, with 3–4 nights. Fly DPS or Lombok to Labuan Bajo, take a day or overnight boat trip to see the dragons and reefs, then fly back to Bali or continue to another island. Komodo trips are tide and weather dependent and park fees change; confirm with your operator.
Alternatives if you have already done Bali and Java: Sumatra for Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang, Sulawesi for Toraja and Bunaken, or Raja Ampat for reefs, which needs 5–7 nights and a longer flight chain. All three are better as their own trip than as an add-on.
Practical notes for any length
Fly between islands and use trains and cars on Java. Domestic flights are frequent but delays and cancellations happen, so never put a domestic flight on the same day as an international departure.
Keep one Bali base per 4 nights. Moving hotels every two days is the most common way people waste a week here. Bali's Nyepi day closes the island for 24 hours, including the airport, so check the date before booking flights.
Budget and paperwork: see the cost and visa pages before you lock dates, and check the money page for cash and tipping habits, since many small businesses and drivers still prefer cash.
- Check the calendar for Nyepi, Ramadan and Indonesian school holidays before booking
- Book Borobudur climbs online; quotas apply
- Buy travel insurance that covers volcano-related disruption
- Keep one buffer day before any international flight
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions readers ask most about Indonesia itineraries.
Questions people ask
What is a good 7-day itinerary for Indonesia?
Bali only: 4 nights in Ubud for terraces, temples and food, then 3 nights at a south Bali beach near the airport. Adding a second island costs most of a day in transfers and leaves both places rushed.
How many weeks should I spend in Indonesia?
One week is enough for one island. Two weeks covers Java's temples and volcanoes plus Bali. Three weeks adds Flores and Komodo, or Sumatra, Sulawesi or Raja Ampat as a separate trip.
What is the best route through Indonesia?
For a first trip, Ubud then a south Bali beach. With two weeks, fly into Yogyakarta, go overland via Bromo and Ijen, ferry into Bali, and fly out of Denpasar. With three weeks, add Labuan Bajo.
Should I visit Bali or Java first?
Java first if you want Borobudur and the volcanoes, then Bali to rest before flying home. Bali first if you have only a week or want an easy start with no internal flights.
How do I get between the islands?
Domestic flights for long hops, fast boats for the Gilis and Nusa islands, and trains plus cars on Java. Keep a buffer day before any international flight because delays are common.
When is the best time to do these routes?
April to October is the dry season for Bali, Java and Nusa Tenggara, with the clearest volcano views. Avoid Nyepi in Bali and check Ramadan dates, which shift each year.
