Jamaica itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

For 7 days, fly into Montego Bay, spend 5 nights in Negril and 2 in Kingston, then fly home from Kingston. Two bases is the limit for a week: each extra move costs half a day on slow roads. Add Ocho Rios and Port Antonio only at 10 days or more.

Summary table by trip length

Match the route to the number of nights you actually have on the ground, not the number of days you are away. Arrival and departure days are mostly gone to the airport.

All routes below assume you land at Montego Bay (MBJ) unless stated. Flying out of Kingston (KIN) instead of driving back saves a full day on the 7- and 10-day trips.

Nights are per base and exclude travel days.

7 days: west beach and the capital

Start in Montego Bay and go straight to Negril, about 1.5–2 hours by road. Five nights there gives you Seven Mile Beach, the West End cliffs for sunset, and one full day for a boat trip or a run down to Treasure Beach if the south coast is open. Negril reopened first in the west after Hurricane Melissa, so it is the safest first base in 2026.

Then take a Knutsford Express coach or a private transfer to Kingston, 4–5 hours. Two nights covers the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road, Devon House, the National Gallery downtown and a morning in the Blue Mountains if you start early. Fly out of Kingston rather than driving back to Montego Bay.

This route works because it uses one long transfer and one short one. Adding Ocho Rios to a 7-day trip means a third base and roughly half a day lost to packing, checking in and the road.

  • Day 1: arrive in Montego Bay, transfer to Negril
  • Days 2–5: Negril beach, cliffs, one day trip
  • Day 6: transfer to Kingston, afternoon at Devon House
  • Day 7: Bob Marley Museum or Blue Mountains, fly KIN

10 days: north coast and mountains

With 10 days you can run the north coast in one direction and finish in the mountains. Start in Montego Bay, spend 3 nights in Ocho Rios for Dunn's River Falls and the Blue Hole, then 3 nights in Port Antonio for the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman's Cove and Rio Grande rafting.

From Port Antonio, cross to the Blue Mountains for 2 nights of coffee farms and hiking, then finish with 2 nights in Kingston. Book an open-jaw ticket: MBJ in, KIN out. That removes the long drive back west and is the single biggest time saving on this route.

Go to Dunn's River Falls early on a day when no cruise ship is in port. Cruise days fill the site by mid-morning.

14 days: island circuit

Two weeks lets you circle the island: Negril 4 nights, Treasure Beach 2, Kingston 2, Blue Mountains 2, Port Antonio 2, Ocho Rios 2. This is the fullest route that still leaves a rest day in each place.

The weak link is the south coast. Treasure Beach and the Black River area were hit hard by Hurricane Melissa, so confirm accommodation and tours are running before you commit. If they are not, replace those 2 nights with a third night in Negril or a stop in Falmouth on the way east.

Distances look short on the map and are not. Negril to Treasure Beach and Treasure Beach to Kingston are each most of a day once you allow for road conditions.

21 days and longer

Three weeks is enough to slow down rather than add stops. Keep the 14-day circuit and add 2–3 nights each in Montego Bay and Falmouth, plus a second stay in Kingston for the parts you missed: Port Royal, the markets, live music.

Longer trips also open the option of basing somewhere for a week and taking day trips, which suits remote work and family travel better than a moving circuit. Ask guesthouses directly about weekly rates; they are often lower than the nightly price suggests.

Practical notes

Drive on the left. Mountain roads are narrow, unlit and slow after rain, so plan to be off them before dark. If you would rather not drive, Knutsford Express coaches link the main towns and private transfers cover the rest; book ahead in high season.

Pack for heat and rain in the same day. December to April is the driest window; June to November is hurricane season, and September and October are the peak-risk months. Travel insurance that covers weather disruption is worth having in those months.

Budget in Jamaican dollars, though US dollars are widely accepted at hotels and tour operators. Carry small notes for taxis, markets and roadside food. Tipping is expected in resorts and for guides.

Check entry rules before booking. Most visitors need a passport valid for the length of stay and a return ticket; some nationalities need a visa. Rules differ by passport, so confirm your own.

  • Book airport transfers before arrival; unmetered taxis at MBJ are a common first-day cost
  • Keep one rest day per week with no driving
  • Reserve Blue Mountains hikes and Rio Grande rafting in advance in high season

When to go

December to April is the driest and busiest window, with the highest room rates around Christmas and New Year. May and November are shoulder months with lower prices and more rain. June to November is hurricane season; if you travel then, build in flexibility and check your hotel's cancellation terms.

For a first trip, aim for January to March. You get dry weather on the north coast, workable hiking in the Blue Mountains and no cruise-ship crush on weekdays.
