Khorog

Khorog is the Pamir Highway hub in the east; plan it only as part of a Pamir trip: 1–2 nights, about 12 hours by shared taxi from Dushanbe or a weather-dependent flight.
Khorog is the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO) in the Pamir mountains, at about 2,200 m, at the confluence of the Gunt and Shakhdara rivers. It is a supply stop for travellers on the Pamir Highway and the Wakhan Valley. Services are basic and prices are higher than in Dushanbe. Trips may need a GBAO permit and depend on road and security conditions, so check before you commit.

Shared taxis and 4WDs for the Pamir Highway and Wakhan; distances are long and road conditions vary. Around town, walk or take taxis (about 10–20 TJS, 2026 estimate). Book long-distance transport locally and agree fuel, fee and stops before leaving. Chartering a driver for several days is common.

Language
Tajik is a form of Persian written in Cyrillic; Farsi and Dari speakers understand much of it. Russian is the second language for most educated people. In Gorno-Badakhshan people speak Pamiri languages (Shughni, Wakhi, Rushani and others) at home. English is rare outside hostels and young people.
