Stop in Khujand only if you are crossing northern Tajikistan from Uzbekistan or the Fergana Valley; one night, about 2 hours from Tashkent including the border.

Khujand is Tajikistan's second city, on the Syr Darya in the north, and it is far from the Pamirs and from Dushanbe by road. It has an old fortress, a large covered bazaar and Soviet-era architecture. Most travellers pass through between Uzbekistan and Dushanbe. It is an easy first night after crossing from Tashkent, but it is not a reason to visit Tajikistan by itself.

Get around

Taxis are cheap (about 10–30 TJS for a short city ride, 2026 estimate) and the main sights are within walking distance. Marshrutkas run fixed routes for a few somoni. Shared taxis leave from the main taxi stand for Dushanbe (about 5–7 h through the Anzob tunnel route, check road status) and for the border with Uzbekistan.

Language

Tajik is a form of Persian written in Cyrillic; Farsi and Dari speakers understand much of it. Russian is the second language for most educated people. In Gorno-Badakhshan people speak Pamiri languages (Shughni, Wakhi, Rushani and others) at home. English is rare outside hostels and young people.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Hand on heart, 'assalomu alaykum'; avoid: Offering a hand to women first
  • Pamiri house: Shoes off, sit on the raised platform where shown; avoid: Stepping on bedding
  • Dress: Long trousers and sleeves; avoid: Shorts in villages

Scams and watch-outs

  • Check visa and border rules with Tajikistan before travelling; e-visa and border opening hours change.
  • Mountain road conditions and tunnel closures can change; verify onward routes with your driver or guesthouse.
  • Summer heat is high; midday can exceed 35 C.
  • Ask your hotel whether foreign guests must be registered under current rules.
  • Police may check documents; carry your passport copy and follow the current rules on photographing bridges, military and government buildings.
  • Taxi drivers may quote foreigner prices; agree the fare before you start.

Petty crime is low, but check your government's travel advice before going, and register or carry documents as required; the Afghan border areas are the main concern, not Khujand.
