The honest verdict
Kinshasa is a very large river city with few pavements, heavy traffic and frequent checkpoints. Most governments advise against travel to the east of the country and caution for the capital, where street crime, demonstrations and infectious-disease outbreaks are real risks. A stay that works is short, based in Gombe, arranged with a reputable local contact, and moved by a hired car and driver. Four small clusters are the only places this page treats as walkable, and only in daylight and with local guidance.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Unofficial 'helpers' at N'djili airport who grab your bags and then demand money or steer you to an unbooked taxi: meet your named driver outside arrivals and say no thank you to everyone else.(Scams)

- Cash, mostly US dollars in clean, recent notes (worn or pre-2013 notes are often refused) plus small CDF for street purchases. Cards work at some Gombe hotels and supermarkets; do not count on it.

- Do not rely on ATMs; carry clean, recent US dollar notes and small CDF notes, and change money only through your hotel or a trusted contact.

- Vodacom, Airtel, Orange or Africell shop, with your hotel: Passport registration is required; ask your hotel to help.

- Greet every person properly before any request or business: a handshake, 'Mbote' or 'Bonjour', and a question about how they are.
- Dress
- Neat and covered: shoulders and knees; Kinshasa is stylish, and people notice.
- Photos
- Ask before photographing people; never photograph police, soldiers, government buildings, bridges, ports or the airport.
