Kinshasa
Kinshasa is a hire-a-driver city: land in daylight to a pre-booked car, sleep in Gombe, keep every move door to door, and check your government's advice before you book and again before you fly.
Kinshasa is a very large river city with few pavements, heavy traffic and frequent checkpoints. Most governments advise against travel to the east of the country and caution for the capital, where street crime, demonstrations and infectious-disease outbreaks are real risks. A stay that works is short, based in Gombe, arranged with a reputable local contact, and moved by a hired car and driver. Four small clusters are the only places this page treats as walkable, and only in daylight and with local guidance.

Etiquette
- Greetings: Greet every person properly before any request or business: a handshake, 'Mbote' or 'Bonjour', and a question about how they are.
- Dress: Neat and covered: shoulders and knees; Kinshasa is stylish, and people notice.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people; never photograph police, soldiers, government buildings, bridges, ports or the airport.
- Elders and authority: Be polite and calm with officials; respect and patience open more doors than argument.
- Religion: Churches are central to life; keep quiet in the cathedral and avoid services unless you are there to worship.
- Meals: Wash your hands, eat with the right hand or a spoon, and wait for the host to start.
- Bargaining: Bargain calmly and with a smile at markets, and never in shops with printed prices.
Red lines
- Do not photograph government buildings, police, soldiers, bridges, the airport or river ports.
- Ask before photographing people; a guide should make the introduction.
- Greet properly before any request; skipping greetings is rude.
Scams and watch-outs
- Unofficial 'helpers' at N'djili airport who grab your bags and then demand money or steer you to an unbooked taxi: meet your named driver outside arrivals and say no thank you to everyone else.
- Police or soldiers at checkpoints asking for a 'fine' or 'tax' for papers or photos: stay calm, stay in the car, show a copy of your passport, and let the driver or hotel contact deal with it.
- Street money-changers offering a better rate: short-changing, worn notes and switched bundles are common. Change only through the hotel or a trusted contact.
- Guides or 'fixers' at the crafts market or the river front who claim you need a permit or a fee to look or photograph: ask your hotel or operator first.
- Taxis and drivers quoting one price and asking for more at the end, or switching currencies: agree the price and the currency, in writing if you can, before the car moves.
